how much RAM?the max a p200 can hold is 4 or 10 MB iThink... it can run system 7.5 but would be absolutly slow with anything more than 7.1 if your 7100 is on 7.5 and you use 7.0 or 7.1 on your p200 you'll be fine get a serial cable and/or localtalk adaptors and phone cables and put them in the serial ports of the 7100 and p200... (you can use teh 7100 as your central server or whatever) Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |

I'd stick to OS 7.1 on any machine with less that 8 MB RAM. I use 7.1 on my Outbound Notebook and it shares files nicely with the other machines on the network (PB 190, 7500, 8500, Pismo, and a G4). These other machines run OS 7.5, 8.6, and 9. I don't have anything running OS X, so I can speak to compatibility there. The only nit is that the Outbound does not like mounting the large volumes of the bigger Macs (OS 7.1 can;t handle more than 2 GB in one volume). But since I can mount the Outbound on the bigger Macs, I can move files that way.If you plan to get other old Macs, you might also look into an ethernet-to-localtalk bridge like Farallon's iPrint. This will let you connect an ethernet network to an older, slower, PhoneNet/LocalTalk network. Its great for networking older Macs and printers that don't have any possible or cheap way for connecting to ethernet. Only downside is that Localtalk is ssslllooowww (about 30kB/s). Yet, I have found that Localtalk is fine for sharing files and making backups of older Macs. BTW, Welcome to the 68kMLA, phatturtle. To network the performa 200 you need system 6.0.8L or better with appletalk. That should work fine for sharing files. The version of appleshare I use on system 6 is 3.5. Talks fine to other macs. Plus system 6 will be fast on that box. But then, I like system 6.emaq123 SE/30 and system 6.0.8 Now we're talking POWER! |

okay, i can go back to os 6 (plus apple talk) the next question is can i use the little adb/phone net thing to connect to my g4 on the modem port and do apple talk that way?

the ADB port is only for keyboards and mice, sorry. You might consider getting a serial adaptor if you want to put your g4 onto localtalk... or getting the aforementioned bridgeOfficial 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

on your G4 or your performa 200?to get appletalk on P-200 1) plug serial cable or phonenet adaptor into printer OR serial port of P-200 2) set the options as such 3) make suer you have other computers (like your 7100) that can use them do you have a printer port on your g4 also? The question here is which G4 model are you talking about? If the G4 doesn't have the localtalk ports, then I'd look to ethernet to network them together. In my house, I use a 7500 as a go between box. It has ethernet and localtalk. I can connect my older boxes to it to tranfer files and it works great. I also use floppies and CDs to transfer files. I couldn't get the software localtalk bridge to work on it, so I will try an older box. Then I can connect my ethernet network to my localtalk network.emaq123 SE/30 and system 6.0.8 Now we're talking POWER! |

That's a good idea, although IMO, an LCII or LCIII + LC ethernet card would be better, because of its low cost. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

and it's low power-consumption and flexibility. These machines had like 20 watt PSUs whereas 7500s had like... 200-300 watters..."running an LC is cheaper than runninng a lightbulb" I love it!! Good point. The LCIII sucks up less power than a 60W lightbulb. And the LC475's newer style power supply sucks up even less power! IIRC, the 7500 had a 200W PSU.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

IIRC the LC475 actually has a 30 watt power supply, I would be VERY surprised if any Mac had a sub 20 watt power supply!! However even at 30 watts it's half your average lightbulb.-------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

You are all right about the power of course. I use the 7500 for the job because I have it and it is already setup and doing other jobs in the house. Now I am thinking of replacing my DEC Alpha 3000 with a Quadra 605 as the house DNS server. I might even look at it for holding my website mirrors.emaq123 SE/30 and system 6.0.8 Now we're talking POWER! |

You'll probably want localtalk adaptors the one with the phone things, you'll need 4 phone cables and 3 of the adaptors.Plug your 7100 into Ethernet with the G4 and the localtalk with the oldies. You'll be using your 7100 as a server now, anything you need to tranfer, the 7100 better have room for. connect the 3 phone-net localtalk boxes to EITHER the modem OR the printer ports. on all 3 machines it has to be the same port (for simplicity at least) hook them all up with the phone cables, be careful with this because if you cross any or loop them short you'll have some machines not working... Your hardware setup is complete. Make sure that when you want to use it you always have the machines set to localtalk>printer or modem port (depending on what port you are using) the 7100 is where the most confiburing is at... you'll simply change in the appletalk control panel whenever you need to swith the 7100 to work with your compacts or your G4..... There is versions of AppleShare IP that will let you do this great thing called "Multihoming" I suggest you get this and dedicate the 7100 or other similar beige PPC mac to doing this.l.. Multihoming will let your mac use many different network connections, the serial ports and the ethernet, for example, at the same time. the most expensive parts of this will be the time you spend finding and downloading old appleshareIP if you decide to, and getting the phone-net adaports... CompUSA *MIGHT* even still sell the PhoneNet thingies... I dunno... Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"
