Just in case some of your aren't familair, this is the method of overclocking that was employed. It's the same process for either the 733MHz Digital Audio Graphite G4 or the 733MHz Quicksilver G4. I remember hearing about this hack back then, and to date I have heard that aside from being the easiest it's also one of the most reliable o'clocks in G4-dom, perhaps being a combination of the simplicity and the fact that it's only a 66MHz bump.

The only apparent issue is heat, but according to XLR8, this shouldn't be that much of a problem in a DA G4 with its four fans. Anyway, this is so far the best deal I've come across, and unless I find something else on eBay or the Recycler within the next two days, I'm probably going to at least go to the seller's place and test drive it. You just can't beat getting a 800MHz G4 for $900. It's easily $400 off the cost of getting one refurb/NOS from an Apple reseller, not even counting the RAM, hard drive, shipping costs or Jaguar pre-install.

I'm still trying to decide as far as monitors go. There's a 17" CRT that I'm watching that will be the default, and it's only $80. However, I've thought a bit wildly about getting a big LCD. My desk space is quite limited, and with a CRT I'm forced to sit very close to the glass. I'm watching a 19" Dell LCD that has DVI input and will do 1280x1024 on ebay for about $600-$700. It would be a dream display, and would fill up the desk I have very well, yet be able to sit back far enough to be out-of-the-way.

Getting it, of course, means temporarily negating some other stuff, like a printer/camera, at least until I sell my 7500 and PC.

Keep in mind that a 19" at 1280x1024 is going to have something in the neighborhood of a .30 dot pitch and will ghost. It will be big, but anything on it will look like "shiot". You will be able to see each and every pixel on the damn thing.

Mag makes a very nice, very crisp 17" lcd flat panel for about the same price. Head down to your local Cramp USA, Shortcut City, or Beast Buy to see what's out there. If you have a Sam's Club or Costco membership, check out what they've got, too.

My last 2 monitors (CRT) have been Mag innovision and I have always been pleased with their quality.

Good advice, Kady, and I had read about those types of disadvantages in reviews of some of the other 19" LCD's I saw, but this particular one (Dell 1900FP) was supposedly better. I'm still wary, though, since I do so much graphics/video work.

I have also on my ebay watched list some 17" LCD's that will do 1280x1024 and are cheaper, more like $400-$500. Since they'd offer a tighter pitch, they may be a better value in more ways than one.

I just really liked the idea of a 19" LCD filling up ever crack in my desk neatly!

I'm pretty certain about the overclocked G4. I called the seller and I'll be going on Saturday to take a look. If all seems good, I'll be getting it for $900 or so. As for the display, I'm fairly certain about getting an SGI 1600SW. I always wanted one, since they're supposedly the best LCD anywhere and do wide-screen 1600x1024, and I found one from a local ebayer for $575.

Mmmm...can't wait to have this all in place!
