soooooo.....

What exactly has to happen for Ti to start shipping stuff? I don't want to be a pest, but i'm bored to death and this is the only remotely exciting thing that's happening.

Has anyone figured out a good way to divide up the rest of the parts yet? I think that is the only thing left to be done.

I would like to put in a request for a couple fans and an AAUI tranciver.

now THAT really sucks! does anybody have any ideas about which ROMs MIGHT work on a PEx mobo?

Thanks for reposting the info, Ti. i wanted to see the updated stats aligned with the photo. it would be nice to have the photo annotated with info on which mobos have ROM's. there are only 5 that aren't minitowers, so i hope you meant the PEx minitowers were the only ones without ROMs. you might think the info is clear on everything Ti, but for the rest of us i don't think it is quite that clear, the ROM info alone is crucial and i think putting all available info on the pic will be a big help in clarifying everything BEFORE we have any more problems.

comments, troops?

ADD'L QUESTIONS:

do the empty 6400 and 6360 (?) boxes have drawer hardware/faces to attach to the loose mobos? i assume the ROMless PEx tower claimants are somewhat dissapointed (am i wrong about that?), so let's see if we can get the two empty boxes up and running that should still leave one bare 6xxx mobo, is this correct?

is there any way to check if the PSU's in the empty boxes have the 3.3v feed? and which of the mobos may need it?

are there ROMs in the 9500? if so, are they PLCC packages that could be pulled and tested in the sockets on the PEx system mobos? don't try it yet, i have a feeling that one of the G-3 ROM's will be the ticket for those systems because of the support for a G-3 card mentioned in the fritter article.

dunno, anybody else got any ideas?

Are we sure they are actual roms that are missing?? Has there been any attempt to start one of those machines up? They might be empty slots for any number of prototype-like things. As far as I know there is no harm in trying to boot a machine up if it were missing roms. I say put as many pieces together in one and try it out.

which of the mini-towers have cpu's and what are the specs? let's get all the info available on the pic.

those PLCC sockets on the PEx mobo on fritter have what i assume to be labeled ROMs in them. they appear to be the same package (IC form factor) as the ROMs on the Duo MiniDock and several of my graphics cards. i don't recall seeing a slot for a ROM card on the PEx board, did i miss something? Z put links to the relevant pics on the first page as i recall.

Ti, if you get a chance, take shots of the mobos in all the PEx cases so we can try to figure out how to proceed. any differences between them might prove important clues in getting any of them to work at all.

the specs on any CPU cards in them will be EXTREMELY important to any attempt to determine what kind of ROMs might have a chance of working.

Ok, I don't know anything about those boards, i was just trying to keep things on a an up-beat. I find it REALLY odd that the roms would have been pulled unless there was something the matter with them.

Ti, are you sure you looked EVERYWHERE for them. I've been known to put parts inside external hdd cases and such. That's just an idea.

Also, another thought I had, what about trying the roms from the beige g3 in the powerexpress boards. They seemed to be developed around the same time. And since they came all from the same general place, maybe they are more similar than we know.

Is there anyway ti can borrow a pci video card for just a few hours at the very least? Could he get one from a friend. It will work without software, just won't be accelerated. I, unfortunately, don't have an extra that i could send.

I'm just throwing random thoughts out here. Most of my mac repair is using trial and error so i try to come up with as many possibilities as i can.

The connector on the top, 2 connectors from the left, is a DB-15 video connector. Every system after the 9500 had built in video until the Power Mac G3 B&W.

The ROM's might become a major problem for these systems. From what I can tell, these are socketed chips, so ROM SIMM's are out of the question. Also, I don't see the ROM's from a 9600 being able to be used on the PEx boards, because it looks like the chips are soldered on a normal board. Hopefully, those are not ROM sockets, and just for something that was never implemented. Unfortunetly, I doubt it.

As far as I know. The ROM's on all production systems are soldered on.

maybe there is a program available to create a ROM image from a soldered ROM?

I just had horrible shivers shoot down my back.

*gathers senses*
Ok, hypothetically if somebody were to find the roms via software, how would we get those onto a chip? I'm sorry if i'm stupid about this kind of thing, but I don't know. As far as I can remember, i don't think I've ever seen just rom images of ppc. That doesn't mean that they can't be found. I'll put as much effort as I can. I'd rather do that than clean my room.

WAIT!!! HAD A THOUGHT!!!

WHY DON'T WE CONTACT THE DUDE WHO HAS THE ONE ON APPLEFRITTER AND SEE IF WOULD GET A ROM IMAGE?!?!? Sorry about the caps.. I wanted to get that out.

EDIT: I just noticed that the info was posted anonymously, so that's out. Crap. Maybe Mike at xler8yourmac.com has some ideas of where to go. He seems to be VERY knowledgeable.

I'll start looking for images. I don't have a clue of where to start. Is preterhuman up? they might have it.

ok, higher intellect (preterhuman.net) is not currently allowing downloads to guest, which i am.

Although i am currently talking to people on the server in the chat room and i quote on user "I saw bootstrap code for it in OS X
" which made him think that it was newworld ROMs. Which i had been thinking about in the back of my mind, but i wasn't sure about saying it here and sounding really dumb (although, that may still be the case)

that user suggested going to applefritter for more info, and i said i would, but I might not be the best diplomat for fritter since i've never posted there, nor do i know anybody besides the mla members.

BTW, nobody believed me that I was looking for ROMs for 4 separate PEX machines. That also didn't help matters much.

Ok, this was at applefritter:
quote:

Logic board included several custom controllers, including FatMan, Sixty6, and an Apple/Cirrus Logic video controller on board. A custom A/V architecture was also implemented, with a new style DAV slot.

This information and these pictures were kindly provided by an anonymous contributor.

the thing that caught my attention was this: Apple/Cirrus Logic video controller on board. And you can clearly see the video plug on the board in the picture above http://www.applefritter.com/prototypes/pex/motherboard.jpg

So are we absolutely certain that we are dealing with powerexpress boards? Could they be 9500/9600 protoype boards? Just a thought.

Sorry about all the posts, i'm posting stuff as soon as i see it.

I am 99.9999% sure that it is a PowerExpress logicboard. If I am wrong (which I am almost certain that I'm not), it's a prototype 9600 or G3.

Although looking at that picture again...
http://www.applefritter.com/prototypes/pex/motherboard.jpg

That white slot directly below the battery looks a lot like the ROM slot pictured on the 6420 logicboard from TiMac's auction. Could we be looking at the wrong thing all this time?

edit: Confirmed. This is the ROM slot (25,25,29 pins) There is a G3 Beige ROM up for sale on eBay for $66. According to Dr. Bob on AF, you can't use a 9600 ROM inside because is it a new architecture (now we know it as "New World").

Ok here is what I have down in my mental picture...The motherboard from TiMacs pictures does have onboard video as previously stated.

My feeling right now is that the white socket farthest right is a rom sim slot. I feel that way because it looks EXACTLY like the one in my powercurve. If this was the case couldnt we salvage a rom simm out of an older powermac?

I realize the brown slot is the daughtercard slot but what is the bottom white slot that looks exactly like a full pci slot?

Anyway you get the feeling that the PEx at Apple Fritter actually works, then how could the rom be soldered on if he removed it for the picture?

the slot to the left is a probably a cache slot. That's what is it on my 8500. I REALLY wish ti had a camera to get shots of this stuff. I'm becoming confused either do to conflicting info or exhaustion.

I'm not even getting one of these machines, i just want to get this cleared up so we can SHIP.

Ok, what about using the rom from penguins beige g3 in these boards, and see what that does. Of course that assuming that they DO have onboard video. Atleast that would give us without jumping and buying random roms.

I would open my 8500 and look closer at the mobo, but it's too big of a pain right now. If you're an owner of one of these machines (Q800, etc.) you understand what i"m talking about.

Sorry about that CyberWolf. Didn't mean to steal all your thunder. I guess it just clicked in both our heads at the same time.

I've checked around on eBay some prices on ROM DIMMs. Because it is a New World logicboard, you would need a 9700 ROM or a Beige G3 ROM. The 9600 ROM won't work (although if someone has a 8600/9600 ROM and wants to try, information is greatly appreaciated). Beige G3's are fairly pricy on eBay. $55 for a Rev.2 ROM, $75 for a Rev.3. For the Freakintosh, Beige G3 Desktop (if it doesn't already have one), and Manhattan boards, a Rev. 2 will probably be good enough. For the PowerExpresses, a Rev. 3 is probably best.

Right now,. I am dreading the final price of all these upgrades... 2 G3 ROMs, 2 G3 processors, RAM... will probably total me over $300.

(Rev 2 allows for faster than 350MHz G3's and any G4's inside.
Rev 3 allows for 4 ATA devices to be connected (one ATA connector on PExM, 2 on PEx)

You know that program that comes with Basilk II and will make an image of a Mac ROM? If it works on a G3 then I can easily make such an image for you.
The ROM is a PLCC, but which dimensions? I'll have to see if I have a ROM burner that'll work.

Wait a minute, did we at any point find out IF my beige even HAS a ROM in it?

Also, my thoughts on that "full length PCI slot" is that it is a video board connector thingie. Yes I am so very technical

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

Dr. Bob over on AF told us the reason for the PLCC in the corner.

quote:
Those are flash memory chips.  Presumably for doing ROM development.

This would make sence, because they had to make a new ROM for New Worl macines in the first place.

And I'm fairly sure that the Beige G3 Desktop has a ROM, because I remember TiMac saying something about already using it. (I am probably mistaken)
