The hard bit is isolating the pins without breaking or bending them.

I've done this sort of stuff with isa PC sound cards when I had a conflict with adlib ports and I just used some tape but the nubus pins are more awkward to mask off.

Post anything you can find about it.

looked a little, but i may have to do it tomorrow, i wonder if slot-saver-extension cards for prototype development are available for nubus. have you ever seen those for ISA, VLB, PCI etc?

I've got a pci slot saver in my IBM 100Mhz pentium but it's IBM's own design and you can't use it in a clone.

I can't recall ever seeing one that would work in generic PC's.

btw the PC above is one of the best PC's I've used.

I've got a PC clone as well and it crashes at least twice a day.

JAMECO used to have them. you're talking about the extenders that let you work on the card up outside the case, right? figured it'd be safer to cut traces there than fool with the card for testing purposes

You could also try ~Coxy's EvilHack -
1) Buy 2 NuBus PCB mount connectors, one male and one female.
2) Buy some small pieces of breadboard (optional but easier)
3) Buy 96 pieces of hookup wire
4) Assemble!

I'd say that would work.

One of the Audiomedia pins that is joined is the 2x clock pin for running Nubus 90 at double the speed of nubus.

I think that pin might be causing all the trouble.

btw you can increase the memory on audiomedia cards using old 486 sram cache chips and setting the audiomedia jumpers for 32k by 8 bit memory configuration.

A 128k 486 cache has 8 32k x 8 bit chips and 1 tag chip that is not needed by the audiomedia.

On the 56001 dsp boards memory is divided into 3 sections x, y, and p.

The Audiomedia I shipped with 4k x, 4k y, 2k p memory.
The Sound Accelerator I shipped with 4k x, 4k y, 2k p memory.
The Audiomedia II shipped with 4k x, 4k y, 8k p memory.
The Sound Accelerator II shipped with 16k x, 16k y, 8k p memory.

If you replace the sram memory with the 32k 486 or pentium cache chips you get

AudioMedia I 16k x 16k y 32k p.
Sound Accelerator I 16k x 16k y 32k p.
AudioMedia II 16k x 16k y 32k p.
Sound Accelerator II 16k x 16k y 32k p.

For mp3 decoding these dsp cards really need 16k x, 16k y, and 32k p.

The memory they were shipped with is not enough.

Audiomedia and sound accelerator cards come up for auction quite a bit at the digibid site.

I think I'll work on getting an AudioMedia II instead, as I need RCA inputs for my 840av.

The AudioMedia I has analog inputs and outputs (no digital) and doesn't run in quadras (only in Mac II's verified by me) and runs at about 22Mhz whereas the AudioMedia II has digital and analog inputs and outputs and runs at about 32Mhz and works in Mac II's and quadras.

Also the AudioMedia II has more software support than the AudioMedia I and the AudioMedia II has more onboard DSP56k memory than the AudioMedia I but both can be upgraded with SRAM memory chips.
I got my SRAM chips from the cache chips of a old 486 motherboard and I went from 2KB ram to 32 KB ram which is useful for big apps like mp3 decoding.
The standard amount of ram is ok for flangers chorus delay and eq effects.

I can't really make out the Sound Accelerator inputs and outputs.
Seems from the pic that it needs some sort of plug adapter.

The memory upgrade is'nt hard to do.

It involves replacing the sram chips with higher capacity chips (I used 486 motherboard sram cache chips) and setting a few jumpers.

If you don't know the jumper settings you can just play around with different jumper settings and test that you get the maximum memory config using

ftp://biols.susx.ac.uk/pub/paulr/synth/synth087.sea.hqx

The above app gives you the DigiDesign cards memory config sizes in it's about box.

It does realtime audio synthesis using the DigiDesign cards.

On your usual 68040 mac this isn't possible because of speed reasons.

Some of the sounds it can do are quite good.

And it also has the Digidesign card configuration info feature as well.

Memory sizes etc.

I just found out that the Audiomedia II has it's memory soldered into the card while the Audiomedia I has it's memory in sockets and the memory size can be expanded.

So I think a version of Mpegdec for the Audiomedia cards can't be done.

A mp3 decoder for the Audiomedia needs more memory than the amount that it shipped with.

The 128k's RAM was soldered to the mobo and lots of them were upgraded to the 512k they were meant to be shipped with.

Cinemo needs to scan his card so we can look for header pads.

Unless, of course, the maniac scanned it before packing it up!

If anyone with a Audiomedia II card could run this small program
that reports the Audiomedias memory size in it's about box
ftp://biols.susx.ac.uk/pub/paulr/synth/synth087.sea.hqx

and tell me what memory size the Audiomedia II shipped with I could get a clearer picture of whether a Audiomedia II mp3 decoder is possible.

I think it shipped with 8KB and seeing that the Audiomedia II's memory is soldered directly onto the card upgrading the memory to 32kb which is the size that's needed for mp3 decoding doesn't seem easy.

As long as the enable lines are still configurable, I would think a daughtercard for the DSP socket (?) should be a simple enough hack to get 32k on there even if it's SMT RAM on the card.

Have you looked at the possibility of using the MPEG card for the 630/5200? It's all setup for doing 16 bit stereo output to Video Player from a V-CD, could you make your software feed an MPEG audio stream from HDD to the MPEG decoder card by masquerading as an external CR-ROM drive playing an Audio Track from a Video CD? You wouldn't be using the mpegdec app for the decoding process, but a front end hack might be a useful feature to add for using that card under the Mac OS if you're thinking about programming it directly for mpegdec's 'nixie codebase.

jt

p.s. There would be plenty of bandwidth to feed a visuals stream to Video Player as well.

Looks like it's possible to do that using the NetBSD driver source code for the MPEG card.

I think the best DSP to use for the mp3 decoder is the av macs DSP.

I'll try to pick up a av mac and if I've got time I'll do a av DSP version.

The Audiomedia DSP version really is a pain in the @#$%$.

If the Audiomedia II had upgradable memory everything would be ok.

Strange how Digidesign make the Audiomedia I with a memory upgrade option but not the Audiomedia II.

I don't know if your Sound Accelerator II is capable of increasing it's memory.

I'm not going to do a Audiomedia version just for the Audiomedia I.

Most people would have the Audiomedia II so if I can't do it for that card I'm not bothering.

I finally got to use a 840av and I put the "Audiomedia I" (not the Audiomedia II) in it.

The "Audiomedia I" is ok with Mac II's but it wouldn't work with my Quadra 700.
Other Nubus cards work ok in my Quadra 700.

The "Audiomedia I" with the 840av works with no problems which I didn't expect seeing how it doesn't work in my Quadra 700.

Why didn't you expect it to work in the 840AV? It's a rather different beast to the 700.

I think the 840avs nubus design is similar to the PPC nubus design.

I thought the 840avs nubus might be similar to the other quadras nubus design.

btw this is the first time I've used a 840av and I was impressed.

It's the best 68k mac I've used and I think it blows away my 6100 PPC.

Yeah, I've always thought that it would be closer to the PPC NuBus design, seeing as though it has to support the faster 40 Mhz '040 and all that. Glad to see that the 840AV's treating you well, I've never even seen one!

thank god i found this thread.
i'm studying audio engineering.
and i love macs very much.

my prob is i have an LC 580.
it does'nt have any NUBUS slot,
so i can't install the audiomedia II.

i'm really interested in the audiomedia II.
i need to prove to some M$ slave that my mac can do audio too.
i'm also thinking of the emac.

can anyone suggest the most ideal system for audio processing ?
this apply to powermacs too. not just newer macs.

thanks.

I've found some information about the Automedia LC card markymark mentioned, but I've never seen one available anywhere.

Yes there is the PAS 16 which you can still buy from Applefritter
http://www.applefritter.com/sell/index.html for around $20 US.

i know about the PAS 16, i email tom himself.
he gave me the shipping & handling for malaysia.
all of it is a whopping $57.
i can't afford that right now.
plus, i'm not sure what to do with it.

definitely not much audio processing
although it would provide best mp3 playback on my 580.

i got a G3 powerbook on my mind.
what soundcard can i use ? USB ? Firewire ?

digidesign is profesionnal, that meaning expensive.
but i'm in an expensive environment.
and have to get use to it.

we got G3 and G4 mac here for our Digital Audio Workstation.
i love macs. i can't help it.
what software would you recommend ?
peak LE ? digital performer ? protools free ?

i'll love to hear your response.

pojam.

I was looking to get a sound card for my IIfx, will the PAS 16 on shreevesystems.com work? I have the original video spigot I wanted to pair up with a soundcard for simple video capture.

Are there drivers for OS 6 for that card?

Looking at the pas 16 link above it has what macs can use the PAS 16 and the IIfx isn't one of them.

For the IIfx you would need a Nubus card like a Audiomedia or Sound Accelerator.

They come up sometimes on ebay.

I don't know about USB soundcards because I still use a PCI soundcard and a Audiomedia Nubus card.

Does anyone have any info on USB Soundcards for Macintosh?.

My choice would be digital performer but pro tools has a free version and you can't get much cheaper than that.

usb soundcard, yes.
my housemate got a midiman usb soundcard.
i read the manual,
it said mac os 8.6 and higher is supported.

so i don't know whether 68k have usb soundcard.
wait, 68k don't even have usb right ?

It'd probably be more accurate to say that USB support is only available on Macs running the PCI Slot Manager architecture, as many of them aren't actually equipped with PCI slots. Neither PCI, nor USB drivers/system level support was ever implemented for 68k, which ran under the NuBus Slot Manager architecture, even on systems with PDS or no slots at all.
