What monitors do you use for your 68Ks?

I am currently undergoing a personal debate about which monitor I should use on my Quadra 700 in July's RetroChallenge. I had a Performa Plus display hooked up to it but the problem is that it is limited to displaying at 640x480, which is not great if you want to use the internet and look at sites like this. As a way around this I have hooked up a Multiple-Scan 15 display which can display at 800x600. Great but in my opinion this display is pretty ugly and just looks like an Apple re-branded PC monitor. The Perfoma Plus display is much more suited to 68K's is terms of design (even though it is also probably a re-branded PC monitor).

I'll probably end up going back to the Performa Plus display, even if it does involve having to constantly scroll from side to side when reading websites!

What monitors does everyone use on their modular 68K Macs? To start I use: Multi-Scan 15, Performa Plus and a Macintosh Colour Display (trinitron tube).

I have a 17" Apple Multiscan (Sony Trinitron inside) that is my main monitor for my older Macs. It's really nice for such an old monitor. Anyone still using a smaller screen, needs to find one of these.

I have a vga monitor that is exactly the same as the 20" Multiple Scan, except it is black, completely SONY, and has a vga port. I use an adapter to use it with my Q700.

With my LC III, I use a Macintosh Color Display. The picture on it is perfect, and the display's curves match up with he LC III.

I just use the two Apple Studio Display LCDs that I was given with the G3 - I have one hooked up to the G3 and the other for using with any other Macs. I know they don't really go with the 68ks as they're what I see as one of the first pieces of "new Apple" (ie colours, translucent etc) hardware, despite still having the rainbow logo, but they are better than the old Apple CRTs that match the 68ks as they look gorgeous (sorry, but the Performa Plus is seriously ugly!), perform better than a lot of them (higher resolution), and of course take up a fraction of the space.

I do have a Macintosh Colour Display (small 640x480 trinitron) that I used with my Macs before I got the LCDs, but am getting rid of it as I only have the space to keep either that or the second LCD. They do match the Mac LC nicely though as the base lines up with its case exactly. Using the LCDs does make you realise how bad the video output on older Macs is though, as I mentioned in the topic about 6100s - I'm actually considering getting rid of the 6100 now as I don't consider 640x480 nor 256 colours to be useable, and is a waste of a decent LCD really. I haven't tried an LC II on there yet, but those probably only do very poor quality resolutions too

...sorry, but the Performa Plus is seriously ugly!

It is true that it's not pretty but I am so used to using it that I have grown rather attached to it's aesthetics. I actually have two of these but the other serves purely as a spare in case this one dies. I have seen old "Tulip" branded PC monitors which are identical to the Performa Plus in every way except they are VGA and can display at 800x600. This suggests that Apple just re-branded a PC monitor as the Performa Plus (it doesn't even have an Apple logo on the front).

My favourite has to be the Macintosh Colour Display though, as it is distinctly "Maccish". Mine unfortunately has a habit of making a loud, high-pitched whining noise which suggests that the flyback may be failing, so I tend not to use it much.

I use Apple monitors exclusively on my 68K modular Macs. I use either 12" or 13"/14" depending on what I have and what machine it is. I like smaller monitors and lower resolution better (they take up less room and the bigger print is better for my aging eyes).

I have a KVM with a SONY 17SF2 (17") plus a couple of other 17" PC type monitors for my video editing gear. Not a single Apple made Mac monitor in the collection yet.

I have my Quadra connected to an old A/B KVM switch (just using the VGA portion at the moment). It's sharing a 15" Dell D828L with my Slackware PC. I currently have it set to 832x624 resolution at thousands of colors.

CRTs: For old time's sake, I have an NEC clone made by MicroVitec that works with a IIgs, Mac or PC at resolutions up to 800 x 600. Actually, it has an interpolation mode that allows higher resolutions, but it is pretty ugly. Other CRTs are model specific (NeXT, Sun, IIgs) or generic VGA or composite sync.

TFTs: For convenience, I almost always use a modern TFT with old Macs. I can carry them around easily and they all still work 100%. Whenever possible, I've equipped myself with video cards that run at 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024, so that things look good. At the same time, I can cope with non-native resolutions on a decent TFT.

With my LC475 i use a Samsung SyncMaster 510S

With my PowerBook 1400 i use my AppleVision 1710AV

With my Performa i use my TV!
