Wallstreet/PDQ power adapter???

I recently bought a replacement power adapter for my PowerBook G3 off ebay not knowing that Apple decided to produce multiple versions of the hockey puck power adapters under the exact same model number.  In fact every identifying number on the things is identical!  However the connectors that would plug into the PowerBook are NOT the same.  I'm assuming that the one I bought is for a G4 or iBook or something??

So my question is: how do you know that you are getting the right power adapter end when purchasing one of these things?!

Also, does anyone know how to open one of these things up without destroying it?  The seller shipped me an extra with a bad cable end.  I'd like to swap out the whole cord rather than splice a new end on.  I'm very fond of these hockey-puck/yo-yo adapters and want to preserve the aesthetic.  Figure I'll buy another cheapo square adapter and swap the cable onto one of these.  Of course I have to know I'm not just buying ANOTHER one with the wrong end first!

i tried once, but in the end got destroyed, both parts are glued together pretty hard, not easy to split

IN GENERAL, the later small diameter jack pucks for TiBooks/snow iBooks have black plugs, while the earlier large diameter plugs(that work back to the Duo series) have silver plugs. Also, SOME of my small-diameter adapters have the wire going into the end of the jack, while on all the large diameter ones the wire goes into the side.

If in doubt, ask the seller to measure the diameter for you.
