USB mouse won't work in OS 9

So when I had to boot into Mac OS 9 on my G3 today in order to repair BootX after changing hard drives, I found that my Apple Pro Mouse wouldn't work (clearly I haven't used 9 since I got the Pro Mouse). Instead, a box pops up saying something like "no drivers for Apple USB Optical Mouse, would you like to search the internet for some", and OK-ing that brings up a dialog with the stripey "busy" bar and "searching for drivers with Software Update" or something similar, and it just sits there like that. I had assumed that something as simple as a USB mouse would be Plug&Play, but it seems as though that's not the case. Therefore, is there any way to get the mouse to work without completely reinstalling OS 9? (presumably if a USB mouse is present when you install the OS, which it wasn't when I installed this, whatever is needed to make it work gets installed then) I already have all the USB extensions though, as those are installed if USB ports are present when installing OS 9, which they were. I can't do the thing of running OS 9 setup again and deselecting everything except the USB Mouse software (if there is such a thing in the installer) as I only OS 9.1 install CD, which I don't want to install stuff into OS 9.2.2 from (if it even lets you). Any ideas?

humm, my wireless optical USB mouse works in OS 9.2.2. i wonder why That Apple USB optical mouse dont work in OS 9.

BTW have you ever tried USB overdrive

http://www.senlick.com/html/01.01.html

but you should not need it to get that to work

i wonder if you have all of the USB extensions installed that needs to be installed. cause that sounds like the case. cause it should have no problem working.

that is the same mouse my uncle has for his iMac G3 233mhz running OS 9

Was your mouse connected up when you installed OS 9? I'm thinking that maybe there's something that only gets installed if it's connected during the installation, although you'd think the standard USB extension would be enough. The only USB extensions I've disabled are ones for things that I definitely don't have eg the "Nomad something-or-other" ones, but I think they come with iTunes, not the OS, anyway. The USB itself definitely work fine in my OS 9 installation, as USB storage keys work. Very strange :-/

I know that some mice won't have full functionality in OS9, but all the ones I've ever used (at the very least) were able to point and click. Mice with multiple buttons and a scroll wheel typically don't work properly without a full-blown driver, but I've never heard of a mouse not working at all...

i know there is a bunch of USB extensions for OS 9, i didnt have my USB mouse connected when i installed OS 9 on my system . but it uses a PCI card for its USB.

i can hook my USB mouse up wile in OS 9 and it works fine ( also have USB overdrive installed to use the scroll wheel and other button.

i will have to check to see what all USB extensions are installed on my OS 9 and maybe that can help you to get your mouse working
