System Error Occured ID=02

When I load certain disks in my Mac 128, the Mac 128 will boot from it, but when I double-click on the disk icon to view its contents, the error message "A System Error Occurred, ID=02" is displayed.  What could be the problem?

As someone said in your other thread, this is could be a read error, and be caused by that filter. Forget the name, its in the other thread.

Thanks for the help.  At this point I will be looking at three options: 1) replacement of RAM (they are socketed now, it should be a lot easier), 2) replacement of Bourns filters (I just ordered a set), or 3) replace both.  I will then see if those problems go away.

Uniserver actually sells RAM chips on his store (macapps.com) for $35 a set. He Re-Ramed mine himself as unlike yours, it was soldered.

I think a replacement Bourns filter will suffice but it's good to know where you can get new RAM for the 128k Mac.  :)

Thanks, a friend of mine has NOS RAM chips, I got a set of 16 from him.  That should do the trick.  Another friend of mine had re-RAMed the Mac 128 and socketed each chip.  Unfortunately I noticed that he had used two different brands of chips (8 Samsung and 8 Apple-logo'ed).  I had heard that using different brands could cause a problem and also that the Apple logo'ed chips were poor quality.  That 'may' explain the issue I was having, we will see.  In any case it doesn't hurt to have some extra RAM chips.

Yeah, Id go with the same brand JUST IN CASE. Some companies would make something a little different...

I haven't received my replacement RAM yet but here is some additional information about the error condition that I reported:

  1. The error only occurs when I try to open the disk to view its content, and this both by double-clicking on its icon or by using the File > Open sequence.
  2. This error only occurs with certain disks or certain disk images but not with all disks.  The error is also reproducible at will, i.e. a disk or disk image that generates the error will always generate the error.
  3. The error is reproducible from the internal drive, the external drive, and even from an externally connected Floppy Emu (in Macintosh floppy emulation mode).
  4. Even though a given disk will cause a system crash, I am able to boot from the disk and run applications from it, e.g. control panel, etc.
  5. I have tried the same disks and disk images on a Mac Plus (with the M0130 drive from the Mac 128K and with the Floppy Emu) and I do not get the error.  Therefore the problem is not caused by the disks, disk images, or drives.  Ideally I would test this on another Mac 128K but I don't have two.
  6. When I use a disk that will cause the crash and double-click on the disk icon, the system appears to be accessing/reading the disk and then crashes.  When I use a disk that doesn't cause the crash and double-click on the disk icon, the system doesn't access the disk and properly displays its contents.
Does that give anyone additional clues as to what could be going on here?  Would a RAM or Bourns filter issue only show up with certain disks and not others?
