Successfully restored my LG DRN-8080n from the dead!!!

One of my precious Pismo Powerbooks had a dead/walking-dead LG DRN-8080n drive in it. I could care less about burning CD/DVD from inside the bay. (that is what external writers are for, ya know)

But, too boot from a disc and load an OS or run a game (like Tomb Raider Gold) it is almost a requirement.

I talked with a former PC repair guy who I met at a local brew-pub. I told him about my issue with the LG drive and he said just swap out the dead drive mechanism and find one that was compatible. The ROM is in the internal board, not the drive/motor housing.

So, a quick trip on fleabay and I ordered a NOS Compaq LG DRN-8080n drive for $10 and thought... what the heck... why not.

After about 20min, I had the drive units swapped and the original Pismo DVD faceplate back on.

PERFECT!!! ZERO issues and everything works like it should.

The Compaq unit I acquired is 168003-336, but the firmware on the board (again, not the motor/drive unit) is hard coded to "1"... after the swap, the drive shows up as unit "0". ;)

Hope this helps fellow DRN-8080n drive bay owners.
