Socketed SE/30 board!

I got an SE/30 from a member here for the cost of shipping. I crack it open and find this! I don't know how rare (or common) these are but it's pretty cool!

I have seen these go for good money on eBay, but what is it really worth?

they arnt that rare, I do see quite a few of these to work on with random issues. Of course they arnt nearly as common as they used to be, but thats just about true for everything. 

And in one case, I made a non-socketed board a socketed one for JDW.

They do look cool, I think the gold on the top of the processor stands out.

I've got a couple of em. There should be a wire soldered on somewhere. There is actually a trace cut before the solder mask was applied. The next board had several changes. I liked the socketed ones the best though.

yeah totally not rare or unique at all... common.

The wire is on the back.  They offer only 1 advantage over a regular SE/30, and that's if you have a rare-as-hens-teeth 040 upgrade that goes in the socket instead of in the PDS slot.  That leaves the PDS slot open for additional upgrades.  However, I think it was made moot once those dual slot adapters became available.

well heck with a solder sucker and socket one could make any se30 socketed.

Yeah, just picked up one myself thanks to danamania. IIRC the Diimo 030 upgrade can go right in there or perhaps it was one of the other ones. That of course leaves your PDS slot free for something else.

Daystar also made an '030 upgrade for the socket - I have one, but I reckon it has issues with sound timing

probably every bit of 35 minutes with a hakko 808, I'v removed a socket once. ( to remove )  then you would have to re solder all those pins, that might take another 10 minutes.

i'v removed a couple cpu's/ FPU's  from parts se/30 boards, I just use a heat gun for that… get the bottom nice and hot, flip upside down and the cpu falls right out.

Hmm, maybe I should consider that option as apparently the socketed ones are being kept due to the impression they are rare. I think they are probably somewhat less common, but not really rare as I have seen many reports of them.

I had the Daystar 50mHz socket upgrade in my SE/30 a while back, along with the grayscale upgrade card.

With the dual PDS adapter, I was able to get ethernet in there too.

I know the one I got recapped was socketed, as was the SE/30 I gave to my cousin many years ago.

All of these SE/30s have been from 1989. The one I'm picking up on Saturday is a December 1990, so it just may be a revised edition?
