Shiva EtherGate Internet Manager

This software should be posted to Mac Garden to preserve it and prevent it from disappearing, as it was thought to have until now.

This is how it looks like:

With the 'Internet Manager' you can configure the LocalTalk ports as remote serial  (to connect to remote AppleTalk networks) or as direct network network connection to bridge between Ethernet and LocalTalk. You can also define and setup the zone names and ranges...

The FastPath was the predecessor to the EtherGate – don't know its features. The EtherGate has 2 LT and 1 ETH port, which can be switched between AUI or BNC (10Base5 or 10Base2). In the nineties at Linotype/Germany we used them to connect all printers (LaserWriters) and PCs (PhoneNet) to the Ethernet backbone and also attached remote offices via modems connected to the LT ports...

Shiva and Cayman later created incompatible standards to tunnel Appletalk over TCP/IP (think VPN for AppleTalk networks). The latest revision of the FastPath software supports the unified TunnelTalk standard intended to interoperate tunnels between FastPath and GatorBoxes, but I don't think Cayman ever got around to implementing it.

Isn't AppleTalk limited to something like 8 computers per zone?  Or maybe it's 16.  I can't remember.  If the EtherGate can bridge 2 AppleTalk networks, that'd be pretty useful.  I think the Farallon StarRouter could do that with additional modules.

Per LocalTalk Segment at least 32 nodes, per Zone I think it was 254 (8bit node address). And then there was EtherTalk Phase 1 and 2 ... and PhoneNet Talk...

I remember on PCs the AppleTalk stack took > 128kB of RAM, terribly much under MS-Dos...

Hey that's awesome Retmarut!  It's working as expected?

If anybody else wants one I have 8 still in shrinkwrap that I can send quickly. PM me an offer and an email address. I don't want to discuss it in the open :)

Looks like fun gear, but for what I do at my place, I don't know it gets me more than what I have with my FastPath 5...

I'm not familiar with the FasPath but if it is an AppleTalk <--> Ethernet gateway then you're most likely all set.

Yes - that's exactly what the FastPath is, and what it's doing at my house.

Best I can tell, Ethergate is a later, more feature-ful version of the same thing.

Hi there!
By any chance does anyone have the manual for a Shiva Telebridge? I'd love to change the name in mine, but have no idea of the password already set in the device.
Thanks!
