SE FDHD Flyback lived its last day. Suggestions that don't cost more than the machine is worth?

Well, my worse nightmare came true yesterday. I was using my SE FDHD playing some Arkanoid and all of a sudden the screen just went blank and smoke started pouring out of the fan. I immediately turned it off and opened the case to find the Flyback had done its last task of its life. I briefly tried to power it on while it was open and you can see the Flyback slowly arcing and burning itself even further. I've been using this machine on and off for the last few months without any sign of an issue, this literally came out of nowhere. Part that hurts the most is that it came with a Asante MAC CON SE and a bit of screen burn so I decided to buy a replacement CRT so that it would be in pristine shape. New screen was installed a few months back without issue and the Ethernet Card works as well; SIGH....

Spent a few minutes crying and then started my searching for a replacement which was yet another slap in the face. Some full analog boards for $100+ in unknown condition and some store in Miami which is like 5 min. from my office wanting $150.00. I decided to call them to see if they would give me a deal outside of eBay to which he simply said "$150.00 cash and its yours". OUCH...

Seems these are unobtanium at any reasonable price.

So I am posting here to see if anyone has a spare they are willing to sell in the states at a reasonable price.

If not I guess I have a parts machine on my hands :(

Lastly, what could have caused this, Father Time? Is there something I did to cause it? I have an SE/30 that I am now paranoid to use and wanted some tips to see if this can be prevented.

Thanks!

I mean, if you’ve got time, I’ve got a few spare SE ABs with fly backs on them. I could desoldered one for you if you don’t mind waiting for me to do it. I’ll get it to you for under that. Send me a PM.

danny.g - it looks like you have it all worked out, but I had a similar situation a few months back and experienced the same initial sticker shock that you did. Shortly after that, I found an excellent AB with flyback that was less than $40 shipped.

I guess this is why I have four SE's... spare parts. At one point you could pick them up really cheap.

also, did you recap the analog board? I wonder if failing capacitors could somehow cause the flyback transformer to go?

Hello Smrieck551,

Yup, the Analog Board and Sony PSU were recapped by myself. I thought that would help in the longevity of the overall system but I guess anything can happen at any time.

Lesson learned and noted about part machines. Might have to start thinking about that in the near future but my wife is a teacher and on summer leave so I can't fund that endeavor any time soon.

For now I will patiently wait for the Flyback replacement that Laporta (He's a real life Super Hero if you ask me) so graciously offered to sell me and hopefully put this behind me once and for all.

Thank you for your input :)
