Sad Mac code meaning LC II

I've been trying to get 6.0.8L working on my LC II...not as easy as it should be...(Anyone have any hints??)

I think I got a complete install finally, but when I tried booting from it, I got the happy Mac icon and chime, then a blank grey screen, then the happy Mac again; this repeated a couple of times, then I got a sad Mac code:

All the info on sad Mac codes are for earlier computers...anyone know what this code is?

I am guessing perhaps a software related code, because the hardware works fine for 7.0.1, but what?

If it is software, anyone have any ideas how to get 6.0.8L working?

Did you try striping all but the lobo RAM from your LCII? I've noticed that 6.0.8L was pickier about RAM in my Classic II than 7.1. Wouldn't boot properly until I swapped around enough to find sticks that worked.

Unless the original RAM is not good, this isn't it...my LC II never got upgraded from the original 4MB from Apple.

I suppose I could take out 1 stick at a time to see if one or the other isn't good...

$000F is a '68K exception': trans. a software error, and by far the commonest error code. Almost nowhere will you find any more definition than that.

This means that you have to go over your preparation of HDD and floppy for transfer of software (or LocalTalk connection) piece by piece to ensure no corruption of the System software along the way from packet to plate. Download the System from another source, if need be, and don't decompress/decode it on any but another 68K Mac even if you use a PowerPC for download. Use no higher than StuffIt 5.5 for the decoding. You can overcome, but it can be a tedious task.

System 6.0.8L was at best a stopgap release pending distribution of System 7. While the System may be of antiquarian interest, the LC II gives it only grudging support, and you will be better served by System 7.

Follow equill's advice -- unless you have some urgent need to run 6.0.8L, system 7 will likely serve your needs much better. For one thing, you'll be able to surf the web. The sole system-6 compatible browser, Samba, is too ancient and unstable to be useful as more than a curiosity.

I shall certainly try out equill's advice.

I have 7.0.1 on it, and 7.1 as well (all on separate partitions), as well as an ProDOS partition for the Apple IIe card; it is exactly what was said...it is a curiosity. I have the regular 6.0.8 on the SE, on a ZIP, and will make boot floppies for some earlier systems for the SE when I get around to it. [/img][/i]

Older Mac Systems can get extremely twitter and bisted when they share a drive—even on different partitions, let alone on the same one—unless you are using the likes of System Picker to choose between them. If you do not, you may find that, different partitions or no, Startup Manager is going to be much less befuddled, and less likely to $000F at you, if only the intended System Folder is blest. That means that you will need to remove each unpreferred Finder from its System Folder to root level of the relevant volume, and drop Finder back onto the relevant closed System Folder immediately prior to restarting from that System version. Tedious, but potentially necessary if you do not have System Picker.

An LC II will run regular 6.0.8. This was done for compatibility with the Apple IIe card disk.

equill...thanks; yes, I am using System Picker. Surprised me totally when Startup Disk saw all of the partitions as one! I never used it back when I was actually using System 7 for "real" work...never had a drive big enough!

Scott, I'll try out a regular 6.0.8 and see what happens. I was wondering about that, as I've seen some things saying it could, some that insisted it be the L version, and some that said forget it, it has to be 7 on an LCII.

Yep, Scott's right, an LCII WILL run the full System 6.08, I've had it on my LCII and it works fine.

LCIIs seem to be as common as beetles, so I'm sure that you'd be able to find one without trouble if you posted a Wanted notice on freecycle/craigslist/etc.

Either that, or you could ask someone for an LCII or LC ROM, and load it up in Basilisk II.

It may have been possible once, but the current versions of Basilisk will not do the job.

I'm quite surprised to hear 6.0.8 works on an LC II - it was never advertised as such. I put 6.0.8L on mine and never even thought of trying the normal version.

If having a "right mind" is a criterion here, I think more than a couple of us would have to leave.

I actually browse regularly (not frequently, but regularly) with my Plus. Admittedly, it's not my main machine for surfing, but there's a perverse appeal to using a classic mac to download software for other classic macs...I have a stack of zip disks with archives of older software. With an LCII, you could do all that, and also burn CDs of all the great software you download.
