Ryoba time! It feels soooo good . . .

NIGHT STALKER

. . . to be whaling away with the ole' plexi scribe & the Japanese pull saws again! }:)

I liberated what is to be a wide aspect ratio, NO maintenance MacQuarium for $4.00 today at the Goodwill store!

I'm reformatting the "display" of my ancient "TrashCanMacHack" which was based on some non-descript and eminently boring 15" AIO or other.

I'll be installing some kind of 2 card riser PPC/PCI mobo that I found in a box on the top shelf of one of the closets in the front bedroom/studio. I think I've got an extra AVP/TV_Tuner rig to set up a VHS/CD MediaServer, Fileserver, CD Duping-Cassette-n-Vinyl Converting Workstation . . .

. . . with FEETS! 8-o

Hopefully, the wide aspect ratio'd WaterLess "MacQuarium" section of the hack will pivot upwards to reveal removable drive cages and the second CD, or maybe a DVD Burner that I've got laying around!

I've been documenting the progress with the new 10MPixel camera an' she's 'a'lookin 'goooood so far! ;)

Updates may follow. ::)

"with feets"...I'm assuming this is going to be involve Takkifying a Colour Classic?

Nope! NEVER! A CC is definitely NOT a "non-descript, eminently boring AIO . . . ::)

. . . and it certainly wouldn't look good with a wide aspect ratio display. :p

Besides, I've never glommed onto one! :'(

Whereas:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Macintosh_Performa_5200.jpg

. . . meets that description perfectly! ;)

I've got just the shell that was originally the silly TrashCanHack. Whenever I find a place to post piccies, I'll reload all the old hacks of the past along with shots of the new ones.

This hack involves lopping 2.25" outta' the center of the side sections of the CRT bezel, which line up nicely when re-assembled, BTW. The CRT bezel face has been cut back to a fairly thin edge. Now I'm deciding which sections of the back of the case need to stay and which will feel the bite of the wild Ryoba . . .

. . . after being scribed within a hair of its life by the plexi scribing tool! }:)

The tilt-n-swivel base is a goner, as is the original faceplate, all of which will be replaced by most of the chassis and plastics of a Q630 I got for $10.00 as-is from a thrift shop. It's amazingly full of crud which needs to be blown out and I'll need to check out the Takki stuff to see if I need to do anything special about the PSU voltages for PCI. I'd rather not use the PSU from the 6360 if I can help it.

I'll need a multidrive case PSU at the very least if not a full fledged ATX PSU for all the drives mounted behind the flip-up "MacQuarium" facia. Maybe I'll just adapt a decent sized one and ditch Apple's "standard" substandard (read anemically underpowered) PSU with one REAL one to provide ALL the power and better cooling.

I'll whip up some REAL FEETS for the bottom of the Q630 case to supplemment/complement the pseudo-feets on the sides and set the beast up at a jaunty angle like all the earlier AIOs.

I haven't done more than try out my plastic welding rig yet, so I'll practice using thinly sliced Mac case scrap ABS (?) as the welding rod on this hack. Though it'll certainly end up painted black to go with the PS2 wireless mouse/KBD combo running the 1 PC-3 Mac KVM setup down in the living room . . .

. . . and coincidentally, hide the sanding marks, filler and the mismatched coloration of the donor plastics. }:)

I hope that explanation was sufficiently confusing for the time being!

Sure was ....

MacQuarium? I'm not following. Are you installing a wide LCD or one of those bargain bin flat imitation tropical fishtanks?

The latter of course, how else is one to do a NO Maintenance MacQuarium?

Even my plastic fish need to have their tank cleaned out occasionally! ::)

What's so great about this "bargain bin flat imitation tropical fishtank" is the modern lookin' wide aspect ratio of the "tank's" wavy plastic face. Add to that the fact that the wavy clear plastic is flexible enough to conform to the curvature of ALL 4 SIDES of what remains of the very much trimmed back edges monitor bezel! Not to mention the 2.25 inches lopped off the height of the bezel to achieve the wide aspect ratio.

I've separated the domed section of the monitor enclosure from the curved roof section. The whole thing will be mounted on an upward pivoting parallelogram unit so it'll stay up on its own when raised. This will allow easy access to the extra optical drive and the removable drive cages I plan to mount in the monitor bay.

jt: havin' a GREAT Time! :b&w:

By the way, on a semi-related note, at about the same time as you did the TrashCanMacHack, I also seem to remember you working on a hack called "KnuckleHead", which involved doing something with the chassis from the 5260...any news on that? ;)

Just bad news I'm sorry to say, KnuckleHead never made it onto the U-Haul truck for the trek to NC . . . :-/

I remember you liked it, it was basically the 5260's monitor cage hinged onto the chassis of a LaserWriter so that it could do the "Pivot Thing," but it didn't make the cut. The nicest thing about it was its ability to usilize Letter & Legal sized paper trays as "project boxes" for prototyping new electronics/testing out different bridged '030 I/O bus flavors and that kind of hardware scullduggery.

The Testbeds I brought along were the two headed DuoDock with the jumpered ROM mod and my precious BAbyPB slung underneath the minamalist 230/with the functional LCD on the docking connector level. The other is my NASA Mac Luggable, which is slated for a multiple hack testbed mobo replacement at some point. This one may become unnecessary if my notion of substituting the Mini'Dock DeclROM for the DeclROMs in the DuoDock a/o Duodock II.

THAT would make things much too easy, but just a little bit more complicated in terms of the Power Budget for the ultimate DuoBoomBoxHack that's been on the back burner of my brain for so long.

Whatever . . . what do you think of the modernistic wide aspect ratiod "look" for the upward-pivoting fascia waterless Macquarium" ambient/indirect lighting generator & chock foll-o-drive cages media server concept?

BTW, I tested the "boxed set" mobo/2 slot/riser combo & it's a 50 mHZ 6500 unit with a USB card thrown into the mix.

Hard to tell without pictures ;) but conceptually, me likey. Will there be paint or dye involved?

BTW, do you know what kind of socket the socketed DuoDock DecROMs inhabit?

Yep, I think I stated above that it'll be painted black to go along with the wireless KVM peripherals I'm using on the HP_Mini <-> Three Mac KVM harness from my old desk back in the Big Apple.

I've asked several times here & over at 'fritter where & HOW to upload piccies of what dimensions & filesize limitations, but haven't . . .

. . . gotten ANY FREAKIN' FEEDBACK FROM ANYONE, ANYWHERE! ::)

BTW, do you know what kind of socket the socketed DuoDock DecROMs inhabit?
It's DeclROM (as in Declaration ROM) and "I used to know these things." Josey Wales Mode> However the ole'noggin's only workin' at about half capacity right now. I'll have to find the time to take a look, I'm pretty sure I've got a DuoDock II somewhere and I'm pretty sure the MedusaDockHack is the standard DuoDock, but seeing as it's lidless, it's kinda hard to tell from memory. ISTR that it had the power pin jumper mod on a soldered down IC of some type I don't recall offhand, which makes it highly likely that it's a standard DuoDock.

On the DuoDock II, you remove the entire ROM from some strange ZIF kinda setup, so you might call that a "socket." I don't recall anything about the DeclROM in the MiniDock, but I'll bet it's soldered to the PCB one way or another, and it might even be the SAME IC/ PACKAGE Type as the original DuoDock's.

Here's the plan: the important thing is the size and format of the DeclROM in general which ISTR is in some Apple Documentation of some kind. After that it's on to determination of pin count/IC package types used on the three Dock types. From that you can get the pinout information for the various ROM packages from the mfr's sites. After you've done all that: the fun REALLY begins!

We start designing a three-way adapter to try out the three (possibly two) ROM types in the three different Dock types! Lemme know when you've done all the leg work & we'll noodle out the adapter problem, meanwhile I've got an incredible lounging area/four computer play station to finish up.

. . . and where and how am I supposed to upload the freakin' PICCIES?

jt ::)

. . . wanna run that by me again just a little bit slower and with a LOT more detail?

Remember, I'm one of the founding members of the cantankerous old coot contingent of the 68kMLA, not one of you quick young technowhatevers!
