Quadra 840av

My family had a Quadra 840av for a while -- it just went to the recycling center about a year ago. I just looked it up and I'm kind of pissed that I didn't know how much of a beast it was! It was a freakin 68k that did VIDEO EDITING. I remember taking live screen grabs off of VHS tapes... in the mid nineties! It was a monster. The last time I used it (in my grandfathers house about two years ago) I was blown away by how snappy it was running MacOS 8. Why did I let them throw that away?

That's my rant.

Thanks for sharing that with the group

So you now feel as though you've released your pent up aggression and re-addressed your shakra balance (or some such new-age crap)? ;)

I figured this would be the only group that would understand my frusturation as anyone else I'd tell about this would probably just walk away slowly.

:p

I felt the same way when my mom threw out my Pioneer 8-track recorder.

It's sad, but at least it wasn't a MacTV or TAM or 550c; you can relatively easily get another one, if you're so inclined.

Time to get another 840AV, I think. That's sad though.

Franklinstein - That sucks. When I was a kid I flipped out on my parents when they tried to get me to throw stuff away, so eventually they stopped trying to "organize" my stuff for me and wouldn't think of throwing anything out. Every now and then when I'm at my parents' house I get nagged about why I don't just throw away/replace various possessions of mine, though. Currently, my dad has been trying to get me to replace my old Technics stereo receiver of early-80s vintage, but it's not happening.

I have a 840AV that is in excellent shape electronicswise but the case is hurtin... Someone is supposedly coming to buy it off me on Monday but if they don't, you can have it for cheap. It is maxed, 128MB ram, 1 GB drive, 2 MB VRAM, etc. I always wanted one of these since 1993 pretty much and only recently found one. The novelty sort of wore off, it's hard to put myself in 1993-1994 mentally to appreciate this machine. I tried playing DOOM2 and Marathon on it, but it's too slow. It ran Wolfenstein OK, and classics like Links Pro, Lode runner, Crystal Quest, Apeiron, etc. I was able to record some of Pulp Fiction onto it through the SVideo port, but it saved it in black and white and I can't figure out why. Interesting machine, I would have shit myself if I owned this when they came out.

it saved it in black and white and I can't figure out why.
That's a symptom of trying to save a PAL signal when the software settings are expecting NTSC, or vice versa.

Hmmm, interesting. I'll try it again after fiddling with those settings, I remember seeing them somewhere. Thanks.
