preparing my G5 for 720p video?

my computer is a 2x1.8GHz G5 tower, 1.5GB RAM (upgrading to 4GB soon). with TenFourFox, Adium, and a couple other low-power apps going, I can get through around 15 seconds of 720p video without any skipping or glitching. It's got the stock GeForce FX 5200 Ultra - is anyone else with G5's able to play 720p video clearly? Even if I need to quit everything else out. I have no oppositions to upgrading the video card, probably spending the money on a better AGP card and flashing it.

I have no problem with 720p on my quad, but I also have an nVidia 7800GT (and it's a quad, after all). The quad can even do 1080p, but it needs to be in Highest performance mode to do so effectively. Besides the obvious difference in clock speed, the 970MPs in the quad have more cache than the 970/970FX. I suspect your video card is only part of the problem.

My iMac G5 2GHz can do 720p, but I'd have to wait 'till the whole video is done loading, or else it'll be choppy. When loaded, it has some choppy moments, but it's acceptable.

yeah, i figured a new video card wouldn't solve all my problems. nobody here would happen to have any insight on the video playback performance increase (if any) on G5's with upgraded video cards by any chance, though?

i'd love a quad G5, maybe i'll get one if/when i get a job again |)

Prices are rapidly dropping -- this is the time to pick up high end PPCs. I got my spare quad for around $700 about six months ago, and they're getting lower. Subspec'ed ones are falling even faster. For that matter, people can't even give away G4s.

2 weeks ago someone posted 3 G4s, a DA, 933 QS, and a dual 1ghz MDD. All with airport cards for $60 for the 3. I passed. If they'd been faster models I would have grabbed them but I have equal or faster ones sitting here unused.

i got my current 1.8DP for $320 a couple months ago, that was about the extent of my budget :O

(btw, does 10.5 even support proper GPU decoding? i remember hearing a lot about Snow Leopard adding GPU decoding functionality)

My DP 1.8 with 2GB RAM and 9800 Pro (also with FX5200) played 720p AS LONG as nothing else was going on in the background.

You forgot to mention the format of the video you're trying to play. I set up a dual 2 GHz G5 with Final Cut 6 to edit a feature with 2K footage (2048x1024) in ProRes without any problems at all. The same system had no problems playing 720p outputs from that feature at 1.5 Mbps in h.264.

If you're trying to play YouTube or other Flash-based 720p, your system will have a much harder time. If that's the case, try ClickToFlash because it'll allow the selection of the h.264 version, if available, from sites like YouTube.

yeah, i'm talking about h264 720p. unless i had a lot of intense stuff going on in the background, my G5 performed flawlessly playing back h264 720p in VLC under 10.5. however, now i'm running 10.4.11, and playback of the same videos is unwatchable. is there something i can do to fix it? maybe there's just something about 10.5 :/

i'm going back to 10.5, i can't find any ways to make my 720p h264 videos play without massive lag in 10.4. i could watch videos perfectly fine with several other apps running in 10.5.
