PowerComputing Clones

I'm being offered some PowerComputing clones and wondered if anybody can shine some light on me about them. I don't know what model they are, but I will, once I pick them up along with the other Macs I'm being offered. I might put them up for grabs here, but we'll see.

I had a PowerComputing PowerBase (I think it was a 240 or something) that was not a bad machine. It was based off the 6360/6400 Machine, and I can tell you, do NOT use a Vimage G3 (or rather, get one) as it's not compatible with the video card. It has a daughter card, similair to the 604/603e machines like the 7500's and 8x00/9x00 machines. So if you can, find a G3 upgrade for one of those if you want to upgrade it.

I got an XLR8 MachCarrier which has a G3 Zif that you can get a Zif from either a blue and white, or a Beige G3 and throw it in it. But don't count on running OS X on it.

Let us know which clones you get. Some of them can actually be faster than the Macs that they cloned. Hence on reason Apple Killed them off:

All clones are essentially certain Mac models in different cases. There were never any PowerBook clones, but a couple of firms in the early 90s reboxed compact Macs in portable cases (Colby, Dynamac, and Outbound machines), which are all hard to find nowadays.

Anyway, the PowerComputing boxes were typically the higher end of the clone hierarchy, so you're pretty safe getting any of them. Check everymac.com's PowerComputing page for specific info.

I'd definitely pick up some of the PowerTower Pros; I only have one of them.

ALWAYS take any clone machine that is offered to you, even if it is broken or missing parts. The market for Mac clones is even stronger than real Macs from that time period because they just aren't as common and some of them were better than the real Macs.
