I picked up a non-working PowerBook 160. It would not power up.
I found the service manual online but it does not contain schematics. It seems that field servicing was intended to be modular replacement of cards instead of component level troubleshooting.
An attempt at charging the battery failed - the voltage (no load) never rose above 0.3V. I split the battery case open and every cell showed evidence of leakage.

Powering it up without the battery was still no dice.
I opened the computer to inspect the components and found a burned capacitor on the bottom of the motherboard.

The capacitor was obliterated to the point that any of the original markings were illegible. Since almost every similar cap on the board was a 16V 47uF tantalum I replaced the cap with the same value, and tried powering it up. Nothing.
I connected the PB to a regulated 7.5V DC supply that I limited to 2A (the wall wart PS rating). The voltage immediately dropped to 1VDC and maxed the 2A current limit before powering it on and no battery in the bay. Shorted!
In the photo of the fried capacitor, you can see a Motorola component marked "240 B 320". Can anyone identify this component and possibly suggest an equivalent?
