Power Mac G4 MDD Cooling

The extra long video card pictured above is the second version of the Apple nVidia Geforce 4 Titanium. The original version of the card that Apple shipped was a shorter version identical in size to the PC version. However, these shorter cards are still slightly longer than the typical video card. Apparantly, it was discovered that these shorter cards were subject to damage in shipping due to excessive vibrations when preinstalled in the MDD. Thus, Apple revised the design by making them full length to eliminate this problem.

I agree with Mike Richardson's comment about the lack of airflow. I have always felt that this full length card acts like a damn blocking the airflow in the MDD. The added length is in fact just blank and I have always wondered whether it would be a good idea to dremel it out or drill holes in it to improve the airflow.

well i have been running around to all theese eletronic stored pulling my hair out because i can find fans for it and i figure it is a older machiene and ill just let it live its life the way apple made it i do work for a computer store that has like every kind of mac possible and ill just buy another mdd when this one dies.

As a mod its my duty to remind everyone to follow the forum rules, and remember that "Keep it Civil" extends beyond the Lounge.

Why are we worried about a chunk of green plastic? These machines were built for as many hard drives as their are plugs. The cooling systems on these machines are fine.

As long as the machine doesn't reach 150F+ then you're ok.

It is crazy all this nontroversy about the 4600 Ti card. Yes, it is big. But you can see in the pictures that he has PCI fan on the other side of it anyway. I have this same card and it is excellent.

Anyway, I have also been concerned about cooling my MDD, it ran way too hot. No solution yet for me, I am considering re-casing and/or liquid cooling.
