Performa 638CD will NOT BOOT AND FREEZES. CD ROM external or internal doesn't work.

Any guesses? It will boot 1/8th of the way and completely freeze. My external apple drive will not boot it. The internal will not boot it. Both disks are good, and the internal should be good... Both spin up for a second in the beginning. This thing was just working a few days ago. 

Im guessing its the dead PRAM battery or the hard drive is dying? I can sometimes boot with extensions off.

remove the battery, dont need it.  Press the switch on the motherboard, take a look, its probably a good time to start thinking about capacitors.  i have done one with all the rest I have booting fine.  Hard drive could be dying but internal cd should let it boot.  I would lean towards a combination of the two. Bad pram with a missing part of the system, so it tries to boot off the hard drive then hard fails because its not all there.

But holding the C key at boot should allow the cd boot, if not might be caps.

Turned out it was the external cd rom scsi is being the same as internal...

Macdrone, I am buying this machine from Johnnya101, how soon should I replace the capacitors? I would like to replace them before we get trace damage

i have not seen any leakage on the newer perfomas like on the LC's.  I have just seen straight up failure issues, like not turning on and such, more like those caps dry up, not leak.

I mean it's like 1995 or something. Usually you recap 1992 and before around... probably fine for another year.
