Hi everyone,
i recently got into old macs (go figure), i got a performa 630 which was described as working, it did work when i got it but the PSU only powered on in a minute after leaving it plugged in and had a heavy coil whining sound. I recapped the PSU and Mobo since i didn't want to test it for long with that whining ass PSU. It worked great after recapping, for about 5 minutes then something sounded like someone got shot and it triggered my circuit breaker, something shorted out in the psu (dunno what), i then decided to mod a modern SFX PSU in there someone described on here in a lovely thread (thanks again for that very cool!). The System works great now but im still having issues.
I tried installing System 7.5.3 it would boot fine off of my burned CD-R, and installed fine, but i got an error after trying to boot from the IDE drive, 0000000f 00007fff, weird, i tried installing System 7.5.3 again, but it crashed at 2/3 of the installation. Now i can't get it to boot from the CD drive anymore, it spins up and starts reading (doesn't consistently start reading on power up just sometimes), the happy mac does appear but after a minute of him being there he goes away and it returns to the ? floppy. I suspect the drive died while Installing, i ordered a used one from ebay already and i'm gonna try that, but in the meantime i wanted to ask if these drives have some common failure points? I dissasembled the drive cleaned the laser and looked at the cables and caps and everything looks like it's in order. Are failures on these common? I feel like it might be a easy fix if i knew how, after all it was working before.... I also tried freshly made boot disks of 7.6 but those also fail after the happy mac...
