On Mac OS9 and prior, what is 'open play'?

On Mac  OS9 and prior, what is "open play"?

I cannot open Pod Player because OS 9 cannot find Open Play.

i did a search and it looks like a netsprocket.  Much like INITs in OS 7 its like a driver as the best explanation.
