Newton eMate

MacMan

68000
Just bagged myself an eMate on eBay! :D There were no bids (starting bid 99p) for ages but as usual the bids started pouring in in the last couple of minutes. I managed to snipe it though and got it for a sale price of £11 + £9.50 postage, which I think is a decent buy. Sorry if I sniped it off anyone else here who may have been bidding, I've been after one of these for a while. }:)

The stylus is apparantly missing (no surprise) but otherwise the description says it is in good condition and comes with the elusive power supply. Can't wait to get it now!

20 squid for an eMate? Nice one. You can get replacement stylii pretty easily. I think any generic PDA stylus should work.

I made a stylus for my MessagePad 2000 out of a normal pen and a replacement plastic stylus tip. Basically I removed the pen nib and attached the plastic tip in it's place to form a long stylus with a nice rubber grip. I'll probably just use that one.

Yep there seem to be packs of generic styli available cheaply on eBay. Are there any particular ones (ie for a certain model of PDA) that will fit in the stylus grip on the eMate?

Incidentally the eMate is still not here. The seller contacted me saying that the flooding in England is affecting the couriers so it won't be sent until next week. :(

Well it arrived today and utterly bowled me over! What a wonderful little machine it is, and it works like a dream. I like the Newton MessagePads but the eMate adds that one thing that was missing - a built in keyboard. No need to worry about handwriting recognition now..

Mine has the usual problem of dead batteries but at least it came with a Newton power adaptor. I'm going to replace the batteries at some point once I find out a bit more about how to do it.

So yes, I am a very happy chappy! :D I can see the potential for note-taking in University lectures with this as it allows you to type and draw diagrams - something that is not so easy with a PowerBook. Since I can type much faster than I can write it will make note-taking much less of a chore.
