Not Mac related ... but it could be. :D

I just thought this was so cool.  I'm used to "universal" remotes being a replacement for a lost remote, having a list of predefined codes that inevitably don't work with one of your you devices because it's either too new or too old.  With this one, you instead put the remote into "Learning Mode," then pair it with another remote, and record the buttons to the Memorex.  So, theoretically, I can control any device ... assuming I have the original remote.  More of a consolidator versus a replacement.  However, it should work with even modern devices like a Blu-Ray player or a somewhat modern Mac or older Apple TV that still has the IR port. :D

Plus, it just looks so damn cool with the LCD display.

This thing is ridiculous, and I love it!  It would be funny to control modern devices with this.  It would certainly confuse friends and family.

My ultimate goal would be to have a living room that looks like it's from the 1980s, but discretely hide modern devices in it while making my vintage ones prominent.  This remote control should help bridge that gap.  I'll fiddle with it, see if I can get it to work with my DVD and Laserdisc players.

It also occurred to me that on second viewing, I think it's the size of a large brick. :D   Not losing this sucker between the cushions!

I'd imagine not!  Though, if you did and sat down you'd certainly find out where that remote was in a hurry

I'm assuming that the style of that remote (black case with a silver insert around the buttons) was just an 80s style because, apart from its size, that remote looks similar to one we had for the Magnavox TV we had when I was growing up:

The last universal remote I had before getting into the Harmony series was called the Kameleon (picture below).  Coolest thing about it was that it wasn't an LCD but the buttons displayed changed based on what input you selected.  The major downside was it absolutely sucked down batteries because of that screen and the tilt sensor being way too sensitive.

I fiddled with it today, but no luck.  I'll keep at it.  The manual states that it could take several tries and recommends different methods for recording a remote control.  I'll give them a try.

Interesting stuff! Anybody got a recommendation for a universal IR remote that'll handle everything from VHS player thru Blu-RAY with 5.1 Receiver and Audio Components added into the mix? Something like an 8-12 device controller?

It doesn't work with my DVD player or 2nd Gen Apple TV, but it does work with my 5.1 Receiver and TV.  I couldn't test it with my laserdisc player because for the life of me I can't find the remote.

I think I'll take it with me to a Best Buy or something and try it out on a bunch of different Blu-Ray players, see if I can find one that works.
