Macintosh

This is a sort of delayed conquest...

I got this M0001 probably six months ago. I figured it was just some crummy upgraded to 512K type deal. The floppy drive was completely seized up and had a System 1.1 disk stuck inside. I stuck it in the closet for another day...

Over the past few days, I got the drive repaired and working again and made a System 2.0 disk which would tell me how much RAM it had. Lo and behold, the 128K Macintosh. In perfect cosmetic and operating condition.

She will have a permanent place on my desk next to the IIGS.

Looks to be in very good condition, how does the keyboard and mouse look? Makes me wonder how that 1984 machine still works yet SE/30's seem to have all kinds of issues (could it be they used thru hole capacitors instead of the aluminum surface mount tin can ones)?

To be honest I am not sure what I would do with a compact pre SE, that seems to be where I draw the line in conquests (SE, SE FDHD, SE/30, Classic II).

The keyboard (original 128K type) is very good, except the spacebar is yellowed. Also, the rubber feet melted all over the underside. It cleaned up just fine with some rubbing alcohol but it has no feet.

The mouse is Platinum and does not match, I need to get a beige mouse. I might have one somewhere but all I could find is the Platinum one.

This seems to have just 2 or 3 thru the hole type capacitors and they don't appear to have leaked. Sound is nice and strong.

It would seem to make a great typing machine, I have MacWrite 2.2 on the boot floppy. You just need a printer. I should hunt up a couple of neat old games to put on the floppy.

Right now it's the only compact that I have in 100% working condition. I have 8 others in various states of disrepair but it's my goal to try to get all of them back up and running.

Nice find! Those would be cool to have. I learned BASIC on a 128k (might have been upgraded to a Plus, I don't know, I was 8) way back in the day.

The 128k KB, is a little smaller than the Plus KB....

Mine wasn't too terribly yellowed...and it cleaned up..ok, for it's age.

I did pull off all the keys, cleaned 'em and the KB..and put 'em back on, and it works just fine...

Tearing down a 128k, and cleaning the heck outta..I'm amazed how simple that mac was...it sure created a stir when it first hit the market place in early 1984...But the lack of an fan,did cause some heat related issues, and board failures..especially the flyback...

It really is a simple computer. CRT, power board, motherboard, floppy drive. Those are the 4 components and when you take those out you get an empty case.

To my knowledge, the SE and earlier were all through hold.

As for their use, these are wonderful machines. They have bright, high contrast displays. Most of them are silent, which makes them good writing machines IMHO. They work with System 6 and most of the expected peripherals, which means that you can do a fair bit with them. And there is a great selection of fantastic software for them.

I'd love to have one, but I'm trying to keep my collection to a minimum these days. And I've choosen the 68000 based Amigas and a 386.
