Macintosh 512k!

Purchased from AG Wolf on these forums, I have a Macintosh 512k coming my way!!! It works nicely, nice physical condition. Will get to see it either tomorrow or the day after. I have no keyboard or mouse for it, and no boot floppy either. If you know where to get one or if you have one you can sell me (even if it platinum plus, I don't care) and a boot floppy or a tutorial. I don't have any 800kb floppies either. Can you format a 1.4mb to 400k? Ahh the good thing is that it works and the whole Classic 2 thing can be behind me and I can have a nice working compact Macintosh.

Classic 2 is for sale if anyone wants it (Probably not :D )

I'll be updating this thread as I get to it. Oh I am sooooo excited the Second Macintosh EVER! YAY!

Thanks for reading 8-) :p [:)] ]'>

If it works anything like the Amiga you can format a 1.4mb to 800k (and maybe 400k too). Just tape over the hole so it behaves like a double-density disk. Years ago I did that all the time with my A500 and A1200.

Of course if you have double-density floppies then all the better, but I think it's a lot easier to find high-density.

I have loads of 1.4mb floppies.

I'll try Taping the whole. formatting as 800k, then formatting as 400k :D

Probably will not work. But lets see.

With the tape trick, I just had to get a whole bunch of 1.4 disks and eventually I found one that worked as 800k when taped. Good luck.

Formatting a high-density 1.44M floppy as a single- or double-density 400k/800k floppy works well enough, but you won't be able to reformat it back to 1.44M if you ever need to. You don't even need to tape over the hole for a Mac 512k - that is only necessary if you need to fool a Superdrive into believing it's a 400k/800k floppy.

OK, Well you know the IIcis I liberated?

All of the Floppies that came with it (Except one- Macintosh Basics) Don't have that extra hole on the side. I have SUM (Symantec Utilities) disks, but it says: Mac Plus and higher. One disk Called Macintosh System tools (Dated 1990) Is an Installer for I think 6.0.8, and it allows you to install onto a Floppy.

But All of these are 800k floppies!

I am getting closer.

OK I got it and unboxed it.

Works great. It has a REALLY nice CRT. Bright and everything.

The light in the FDD is on and is red ooohh.

No boot floppy for it yet.

It is in very nice condition and it has a loud speaker.

I will need a keyboard and mouse.

Thanks!

Pictures up soonn.

iirc, for a 400k floppy (not as reliable as with an 800k.400k one)

take a 1.4 meg floppy and tape over the hole without the slidey thing in it.

stick it into an old mac (iirc, system 6 or earlier, use the oldest OS you can)

when it prompts you to initillize it, choose single-sided.

write the 400k boot disk image to it.

done.

OK, I'll downgrade

My IIcis fDD rarely formats my FD's correctly. It just says "Initialization failed" or "Initialaziton Failed because the disk is defective."

HopeFully System 6 is better.

Also Piccies here:

I'll be leaving for florida on the 29th so I won't have time to tinker with my 512k much > :(
