Mac Classic Clock

I have this stubborn Classic. The clock sets to 1/1/04. I replaced the battery. It still says 1/1/04 and is difficult to change! I have to click on the number a million times or so before I can enter another number for the time or date. And I have to use System 6 to do it (ROM disk), it doesn't work on 7 at all (in either Alarm Clock or General Controls...don't have Date & Time on there since it's got 7.0).

Any ideas? Maybe the battery I put in was a bummer?

I should also point out that this Mac doesn't display my Apple Menu Items on 7.0 despite them being in the System Folder.

Quite odd. You might want to try taking out the battery and holding down the motherboard reset button for 10 seconds, then put the battery in and reset the date.

Does the date reset itself with a restart?

Just go ahead and measure the battery voltage while it's in circuit. If the battery voltage is at least, say, 80% of nominal, it's almost certainly fine.

Also, what happens if you simply have no battery? Do you still have the same difficulty setting the clock?
