Lucky se/30

With trepidation ive finally taken apart my working se/30 so i can send it off to be re-capped (which i'm still doing anyway) and to my utter delight no leaky pram or caps i appear to have purchased the only se/30 with no damage! I was expecting the worst.

Only real issue is the network card as its not the one I expected and just says its a SHIVA, so not sure anymore may have a driver?

1 have vintage mac owner :)

Shiva was a big name back in the day, they eventually got bought by Intel.  They also made the FastPath AppleTalk to Ethernet router.

I haven't ran into a PDS ethernet card that ever needed a special driver outside of what's provided in System 7.

Ewww... You live by the sea or ocean or the SE\30 has been near there during its life? That is a lot of corrosion on that board! More than that my IIci had when I sent it to Uniserver. It had some corrosion issue as I live by the Hudson River/Atlantic Ocean Tributary... This is going to be a delicate job!

But Uniserver is the man to deal with this. He knows what to do. Looks like you are sending it just in time before it crumbles apart.

Edit: I agree with OlePigeon, Shiva was a big name in Mac Networking and their cards work without a driver under System 7.

Do remove the PRAM Battery, however.

Evening Elfen :) actually the board itself is in great condition, i've just cleaned it up tonight ready to post it to uniserver, i do believe from what the seller told me it was left stored in the gararge for over 10 years hence some rusty external ports and chassis bits, that said i think the cooler conditions has meant the caps haven't leaked nor the pram battery so im happy about that although i will need to strip down the floppy as its sticky and a bit rusty. it works but doesnt latch The floopy down so i have to jam in a rizla packet to read/write.

Sometimes the photos gives more enhancements to details that are not there. But Uniserver is the guy to send it too. With solid state caps (Ceramics or Tantalums) it should last you another 20 or more years.

There used to be a Floppy drive Disassembly wiki... Wait, I found it.

https://wiki.68kmla.org/Floppy_Drive_Lubrication

I use WD40, Alcohol and Acetone to clean them up (Alcohol only on the heads) and once things can move smoothly, Lithium Grease on all the contact points.

Thanks Elfan,

Its my task for tomorrow the floopy drive so this will be handy! i'll be retro0brighting next weekend whilst my board and hard drive are away. The i things i'll be looking for next are the diimo 50 card you suggested and the scsi sd/card hack you aldo sujjested and then upgrade the memory as i only have 8mb think 32mb would be enough? or possibly 64mb if i can get it

Here's a webpage the explains what cards should go where when you're expanding the SE\30

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/se30_pds_multiple.html

I doubt they have anymore, maybe ebay will have them so prepare to save up those pennies...!

http://www.micromac.com/products/diimo_030.html

32MB should be good for anything you throw at the SE\30. System 7.5 and your apps, you probably wont need to use Virtual Memory. So that would be 8 X 4MB RAM SIMMs; you can start with 4 X 4MB RAM SIMMs for 16MB RAM total and then upgrade to 32MB later.

Thanks Elfen,

I had been looking at diimo nothing on ebay and i know thats the biggy for cost. Im going to small this minth max is putting on software on to hhd so its packaged ready to go tuesday via ups and ive cleaned my board now also packaged ready to go to uniserver and ive got my peroxide and uv lamp to do that next weekend whilst my bits are away, so after that ill be looking at the memory next month and get it setup on the network and actually use it and get to know it before any big purchases ;) looking forward to it, its been criminal just sitting there with no software. I did strip down the floppy today and it now works like a dream!
