Linintosh Server (PC to Mac file transfer)

Hi,

Recently I needed to re-install the OS on an LC475 I had just purchased. Seeing as I had no other modern(ish) Mac to work with (being a PC guy these days), I had to do a bit of thinking as the the best way to go about it. The result is the Linintosh server. I have put together a VMware "appliance" that provides preconfigured Samba (windows file sharing) and Netatalk (Appletalk file sharing) instances on top of an open source linux. If you have an ethernet equipped Mac and a Windows XP workstation, you can install your MacOS from the Linintosh server and transfer files between the two platforms.

I posted this in a thread about getting an LCIII onto the net over in the LC forum, but thought I'd post it here in case theres people that might find this useful that havent read that thread. Currently I'm seeding the linintosh server via bit torrent, which I'll probably do for the next week or so, unless there is a bit of interest in keeping it around longer.

I've searched for Linintosh vmware appliance to no avail. This is exactly what I'm looking for. Well because I'm lazy and I would have to build it myself anyways if it wasn't in existence.

It's not in the vmware marketplace after all this time, as well as can't be downloaded from "other" sources that I can find.

Does this still exist?? I saw it mentioned tonight from a reference in this forum for the new 300baudcomputing magazine announcement thing.

The files haven't gone anywhere, but at the moment there are issues with the mac68k port of NetBSD which are causing issues with Apache. I'm in the process of moving everything to my Amiga server (still m68k, after all). Try in a little while - they're rsyncing now and DNS has already been updated (let's hope your DNS isn't cached).

Awesome, thanks for that johnklos. File downloaded, now to fire up my old Mac Classic II and see what I can do with it.

I've also started seeding the file (not sure what sort of demand there is for it, but eh why not?)

Has anyone got this running in VirtualBox?

It fails to setup the networking here. During the boot it renames eth0 to eth1 and then fails like so. I'm guessing it can be fixed inside the VM but I don't know where to start with linux.

Figured it out!

Log in as root, run yast and delete the eth0 network device. I couldn't rename eth1 back to eth0, but it's working fine as it is.

Thank you for your work. I've made a torrent of all my software collection for older macs. It can be used with Linintosh Server, or with netatalk on Linux box, or even with every NAS with AFP support!!

Hi Everybody-- just another reminder that posting links to download pirated software is frowned upon on this forum.

It's great to see efforts like pre-built linux appliances that have netatalk on them. Those are possible because GPL, Apache and BSD licenses on that software allows anybody to redistribute VM appliances, modified code, or new installers.

Old Mac software, however, typically doesn't have that licensing and can't be redistributed that way.

My old Duo 2300 had been catching dust for a whole decade waiting for an efficient way to transfer files onto the Windows/linux world. It works like a charm !

I have trying over and over to make it work with Virtualbox but without any success. Has anyone succeeded ?
