Just scored a 3400c on eBay!

I've wanted a 3400c for years, but never saw one on eBay at a price I was willing to pay for something that would be relegated to tinker-thing.

But an hour or so ago, an auction went up for a very nice looking 3400c for a Buy It Now of $24.99 w/ shipping. And I used the Live 25% Cashback promo, so it'll only cost me around $18.50 total.

It doesn't come with an AC adapter, but it is working. He's not a Mac guy and didn't know the clock speed but it comes with a CD-ROM, 48MBs of RAM and a 1.3GB~ hard drive.

Nicely done... nothing like buying a $4500-$6500 machine for $18.50 shipped! That's a savings of AT LEAST $4,481.50!! Hard to believe notebooks used to cost so much back then. Nowadays, even a maxed out MacBook Pro can be had for less than $3700.

Got to wonder who exactly was buying these heavy, expensive machines back in '97... I'd imagine graphics pros would be turned off by the LCD... and 1997 wasn't exactly a good year for Apple in corporate America. Hmm.

I'm amazed notebooks were as popular as they were 10 years ago. They were more expensive *and* slower. Not to mention the limited screen resolutions.

But yeah... talk about depreciation. It's a testament to the fact that a computer, even a very expensive one, can't outrun the fact that it's nothing more than a jumble of plastic and metal.:

I wonder where I can get an AC adapter on the cheap. Does RadioShack carry anything that would work and wouldn't cost much?

I can almost guarntee that they won't, Apple used some wacky connector for it.

RadioShack might have one - here in Australia, we can get a universal notebook adaptor with a tip for older Macs from Jaycar. For the record, the plug is a 1/8" miniplug with a grounding ring around it.

1/4" stereo jack, as used for headphones, if it's the same as the ones for the 1400, Duo and black G3s. A rubber grommet around the base of the jack will correct the difference in spacing so the rings meet the appropriate contacts. The pinout should be findable, and AFAIK the grounding ring can be safely omitted.
