IIGS Logic Board Capacitors (And list)

Hi all,

Noticed there were no lists for the caps for an IIGS...

Since mine is all apart, might as well replace the caps! 

Heres what Ive got:

16x (Might be 15, gotta check) 22uf 16v

2x 1uf 50v

2x 1000uf 16v

Were your IIgs caps leaking? It seems like the IIgs doesn't normally need new caps.

No, no signs of leaking. Not on the LB. The Ab on the other hand was covered in a thick layer of dust and webs, and being how hot it gets near the CRT Im replacing them. But I mean I've got it apart. I plan on putting this on display next month and its going to be on for a few hours so I am thinking I should replace them all so nothing happens.

Its got cracked flyback solder joints. Ive been having the monitor flicker randomly once in a while. Could these be the cause?

How do I resolder them? Heat up the joint with my hot hair station and suck it up with a solder sucker, or heat it up with my soldering iron?

And do you think replacing the logic board caps is needed? They appear to be fine...

It seems like most IIgs don't have logic board capacitor problems. As the caps on the IIgs are through-hole, I would suggest using an iron with a sucker to desolder the caps. Cracked solder joints in the monitor could definitely lead to flicker.

Also, just for curiosity, do you have a ROM1 or a ROM3 IIgs?

ROM 1!!! 

4MB ram and hopefully will be getting an scsi card soon so I can connect my 20SC...

But yeah, Ill leave the caps then for now. I do have to solder in a battery holder... Will need help with that later. Same with the flyback right, just heat up solder with iron and suck with solder sucker? Sorry, never soldered before

I have the ROM3, not sure why I picked the ROM3 over the ROM1 but whatever! I'm too cheap to buy a SCSI card or any sort of mass storage device for my IIgs. My cheapo solution was to use an ImagerWriter cable to hook my SE running Appleshare 3 up to my GS, which actually works pretty good!

Ill post a photo of the flyback joints. Its a wonder how it lasted so long...

Here ya go! Sorry for lousy photos. All joints except one or two are like the ones with the crack ring.

If you are comfortable, I would say re-do all of the flyback's joints. The joints don't look too bad though (from the photos at least).

I've got a question for you. When using a small font size, does the text get hard to make out? I don't know if it's how it's supposed to be or not... how would I increase focus? The focus dial in the HV with a wooden stick?

I've never had problems with legibility, but then again I use a flat panel display (with composite input) with my IIgs. If you feel like the monitor is out of focus, then adjust the focus pot. The IIgs' 640x200 video mode is a strange one though.

Yeah that's what I've been thinking... because it's like a compact mac resolution stretched out sort of. Everything else is clear so I think that's jut how it is. Maybe the caps will help!

The way GS/OS handles font stretching and shrinking I feel like could have been a little bit better. Make sure you have all the different font sizes installed, that can help a lot too.
