Got my LC475 online!

Using a Farallon ethernet card, I've managed to hook my LC475 up to my home network with relative ease and am able to access my FTP server and browse the web. File transfer rates are pretty decent too!

At the moment I'm using the Mosaic browser, because iCab continually crashed and Netscape 3 didn't seem to work at all. Anyone got any other suggestions for relatively usable web browsers? With Mosaic I have to put virtually every page through Loband to be usable...

That is funny i was browsing web with netscape 2.0 on my q605 last night…

Isn't it great? just slap in a LC PDS NIC, use 7.5.5 or greater, plug in the ethernet cable. and BAM Internet! how fantastic is that :)

Typical mac… It just works. Something that you would expect from a 1993 mac!

Back in 1993, I think having a 475/605 would have made me a happier kid :)

granted mine right now has a 10k HD in it, 128megs of ram, 33mhz full 040 in there, :-)

Which OS are you running? I think you may be missing a few updates -- appropriate versions of Thread Manager, CFM-68K etc. Assuming you have enough RAM, you should have no problem running Open Transport and a variety of browsers.

Take a look at the late Gamba's old browser page for ideas (links will probably be broken):

At the moment I'm running 7.1, but I don't have all the updates (just installed CFM68k). After some playing around last night I managed to get Netscape 3.0.1 running, although for some reason 3.0.4 refused to even see my network connection!

As I install software on my machine I'm starting to feel the need for a bigger hard disk. 80MB is starting to feel restrictive!

You can even go as far back as 7.1 so long as Open Transport is installed :)

that is great , i think 7.1 is my favorite, its got a great balance of features and its still really fast.

still runs fast on 68000, and runs really fast on the 68030!

7.1 is turbo on the 68040 :-)

I'm fairly certain the 605/475 are my favorite 68040 machines.

Cool...

Had my IIci online a few months ago. 7.5.5, Netscape Gold 3.04, etc... It was about 1/10 the speed (10BaseT versus 100BaseT) of what the G4 next to it was able to achieve, but still much quicker than what it was like when a IIci was my main machine and I was on dialup.

Currently hitting "out of memory" errors when browsing Netscape - could be something to do with the fact that I only have 12MB onboard.

Just ordered a 64MB card from Ebay 8-)

Just one thing to remember it's going to take about 15 to 20 seconds to show you video once you power it on,

Will take it a bit to memtest all that memory :)

A 128 meg stick in there takes like 30 full seconds to post.

That's good to know - thanks for the tip!

What with the new hard disk and the new RAM, the computer is shortly going to be a lot more capable!

Hello. Its great to hear you got your Mac LC 475 online. I too have an LC 475 and a Quadre 605 and am unable to get both online. I have microsoft IE browser for 68k macs; I believe its IE 4.5. It installs fine and will open up and attempt to load a page, but no page will load. Keeps giving me an error. Based on reading I think it might have something to do with open transport. I am still learning these Mac OS's out and figuring out all the extensions and what not. I am not to sure what open transport does either. The macs can all talk to one another on my network, they all see each other and can connect to each other with apple talk as well as transfer files. No internet though. Not to sure what is up here.

Nick.

Ok. Thank you all for your help! So I got my Quadra 605 to finally go online I had to use the open transport extension from my power mac 5500 using OS 9. I just coppied it to a floppy and put in my Quadra. I am unable to get to use internet explorer 4.0 on any of my other pizza box macs. None of the other LC's load pages. The Quadra is the only machine using system 7.6 almost all others are using system 7.5.3. I am going to try and use netscape after I get home today. Anything I could be missing on the other Systems by chance?

Nick.
