eBay auction, weird upgrade card to a 512k?

Yes that is a common SCSI upgrade to the 512K, designed to replace the battery cover. It required an upgrade to 128K ROMs and most likely has 800K drive upgrade as well. The Plus did not debut in Platinum. Check out Wikipedia for a history of the 512K & Plus. That 512K by virtue of using HD20s most likely had the 800K drive upgrade as well, and bought the Plus keyboard upgrade.

What is this on this 512k?Its in the second picture over the power button.

Looks like SCSI to me.
You got it! Since it doesn't appear to be a 512ke, (were they marked as such on the mold?) that'd be either a run of the mill SCSI adapter or, if someone here is REALLY lucky and snags this puppy, it just might be a NewLife "Accelerator" Card!

If so, it was a VERY COOL upgrade card, even if it didn't run any faster than the stock 512k. It had

SIMM slots for expanded memory, the SCSI connection, and some truly creative hardware on board!

I kind of doubt that's what it is though, IIRC mine had a DB9 connector above or below the DB25 SCSI connector. Why you might ask? The NewLife folks added hardware to run an old fashioned TTL Monitor (think Hercules Graphics Adapter in the ISA world) with Dual Head/expanded desktop functionality, IIRC. AFAIK, NewLife went under before releasing the drivers for the video hardware, so it probably wouldn't work even if that just happens to be what's "under the hood."

The tech that did something or other to service my 512k told me it was a "really neat" upgrade card and his boss, a fellow NYMUG board member, had stuck a foursome of relatively worthless 512k SIMMs into it at no charge! So I had a 2.5 Mb 512ke and the off chance that Newlife would release drivers for the TTL Monitor output.

I gave mine to an Aunt-in-law along with an ImageBanger I so she could do some creative writing and rudimentary graphics on it. She was an excellent painter/artist and a dab hand at turning out prose and a bit of poetry too, but they couldn't afford a computer. Like the soft touch (idiot) I am, not only did I give it to her, but . . .

. . . I told her I didn't want it back when she was finished with it! It was my VERY FIRST Mac! :'(

Prolly doesn't matter though, I'd have lost it with most of my other toys about three years ago when my storage room contents were auctioned off while I was in the loony bin the first time. :-/

jt: feeling just a little bit BLAH ATM . . . :p
