Disk Copy question

Can a hard drive be successfully "cloned" using Disk Copy in MacOS 7-9 in much the same way that a drive can be cloned using Disk Utility in X?

Typically in OS7-9 you just copy the contents of the HD to another HD. You could also use Diskcopy to make an .img file of the HD if you wanted.

I have found that software registrations and the like do not always work when a disk is copied by simple dragging. I am, however, presently duplicating a disk via Disk Copy so as hopefully to have an exact replica of the first, in order to see if this limitation is overcome.

Essentially, what I want is to have a copy of my drive on a CF card for PowerBook use in a pcmcia adapter, without going through the very considerable trouble of installing everything twice (3+ hours of work?). The latter not only involves looking out serial numbers etc., but then entails fiddling with preferences so that everything is right. It's already right on the internal hard drive of the machine; I just want it on CF so as to save on battery use when necessary.

There is another reason for this. If I can get the drive properly cloned, I will then in future use File Assistant to keep everything the same on both drives. So there's a method in my madness (I hope).

Nope, didn't work any better via making an image in Disk Copy and copying from that.

I discover that what I really need is Apple Software Restore, which I had on a drive somewhere from the Developer's site, but as could not make head nor tail of it, I decided to give it a miss. Much quicker to do a full install than to work through all of that complexity. This is happening now on my 2400c.
