Connecting Mac OS 9 To Shared Ethernet.

Hey guys, just discovered this forum a few days ago and I'm already loving it. Im hoping that you could help me with a problem I am having with my g3's. Ok here goes... I am currently running os x 10.4.11 tiger on an imac g3 400mhz 768mb ram. This mac is connected to my wpa2 network through its internal airport card. The internet on this works perfectly. I am also running a Pismo G3 400 mhz 1gb of ram connected to my external monitor. This machine is running OS 9.2.2. Since OS 9 cannot support wpa internet connections, I decided to share my wireless internet from my imac g3 to my pismo via an ethernet cable. I set my internet sharing in tiger to share from airport to ethernet. Then I set my Pismo to connect via ethernet in the TCP/IP Control Panel. I have also tried appletalk on and off (not sure if this matters...). A few weeks ago when I did this for the first time, the connection was not working at first. For some reason, my Pismo could not receive the ethernet connection properly. But after messing around with some control panels on the pismo for a half and hour, I somehow stumbled onto an option that made my internet work. I could finally share the internet from my imac to my pismo. The only problem is, three weeks later, I have no idea what I changed in order to make this happen (The option changed back to default probably because of a dead pram battery). Im wondering if any of you have had previous experience sharing internet from an os x to an os 9 machine and what I should try in order to fix this problem. Thanks for reading and for any help you can give.

P.S. I know the option that I changed a few weeks back was in OS 9, it was not on the tiger machine.

Well switching AppleTalk on and off won't make much difference seeing as the Pismo is talking to the G3 via IP and not AppleTalk to access the internet, all you need to make sure is that you're connecting via ethernet in TCP/IP control panel which you've done. That's basically told the Pismo to talk IP down the the ethernet cable to the G3. Check the configuration and setup settings in the TCP/IP control panel and make sure the Pismo can see the IP address of the G3. If it can't see its IP address, it won't be able to talk to it.

Make sure you have DHCP enabled on the Pismo in the TCP/IP control panel. Remember that you have have to close the TCP/IP control panel in order to save changes, so each time you try something, be sure to close the window. Also, it sometimes helps to restart after closing and saving that window.

Another thing that popped to mind was a crossover cable. You should be able to use an ordinary Ethernet cable with these machines, but theoretically there should be a hub or switch in between with regular cables. You might try hooking it up this way if possible or using a crossover cable to make it more reliable.

Funny, the Guide addresses this exact issue...

You need to have the Router Address field filled out if you are doing the setup manually.

When you have "Connecting using DHCP Server" settings, after a little bit you should see the fields displaying various IP addresses. The Subnet Mask is always 255.255.255.0, the IP address will be the Internal IP address but it can also be an external IP address, and Router Address must be filled in, because that is the primary DNS lookup (and many other things).

Peruse through the link in my signature to see if you missed anything.
