Brøderbund Installer Animation - Exclusive?

Scott Baret

Last night, I installed my new copy of Where in America's Past is Carmen Sandiego on my LC. The installer is the standard Apple installer in this case (I know Brøderbund used other installers shortly after this title came out; I believe this is also an early use of the company using any installer as most of their pre-1992 stuff seems to just be on a disk).

The program is 6 disks (interestingly, two are HD and the rest are 800K; I think this is a result of the color data, although this would alienate the original Mac II). After disk number six, it asked me to put the first one back in the drive.

A decompression then started, but instead of the usual Stuffit animation or the like, I was treated to a great little cartoon.

There was a guy waiting to go off a diving board. The pool was empty at first, but filled up every time a file got decompressed or progress in general was made. About halfway through, the guy walks towards the pool, sees that it's half-empty, and then goes back and drinks a soda. When it is done, he runs off the diving board and jumps in the pool. The installation then concludes.

I had never seen anything like that before and thought it was really cool. Since there were dialog boxes up as part of this, I doubt I could have taken a screen shot.

Has anyone else ever seen this animation before? If so, is it exclusive to Brøderbund or is it some sort of installer deal?

That is a really cool animation!  Amusing how the first time the guy looks at the pool he's so disappointed that it's not filled yet and goes to get a soda, and then does a happy double jump when he sees it's finally ready.

Yeah it's really cool, never seen this kinda thing before.

This is edited though. It takes roughly 5 minutes at 2x speed (Mini vMac Mac Plus Emulation) to complete the whole animation.

Five minutes does sound about right, at least for using the disks on my LC.

I believe this is in black and white only, as it was black and white on the LC when I installed the color version (and yes, the LC was in 256 color mode when I did it).

Did you find the scene in the Where in America's Past installer or are there other Brøderbund titles which used this? (I do have a Where in the USA Deluxe that's been sitting around for many years now and could try that one out sometime).

Another find from Brøderbund...they did a lot of fun music/sound back in the day:

This was one of the many songs they included in Kid Pix Studio, and it was called "Reggae Bob". There were other obvious parodies such as "Four Toptations" (a Motown-sounding song) and "Johnny Country" (with apologies to Mr. Cash).

I was thinking of this today. It was opening day for my swimming pool today. I got there two minutes early and it wasn't ready yet. I felt like the guy in this animation!!

By the way, has anyone figured out yet if this animation is in a file or just part of the resources? Shame it's not in QuickTime format, would have been a great movie for the Wacky TV in Kid Pix Companion! (I haven't had time to look at the installer disks yet).
