Boxed Software Conquests

I actually got these a few weeks ago, but since I just got around to trying one of them out tonight, I figured I'd finally post about them:

1. USA GeoGraph (MECC). This is a pretty powerful map generator/map customizer/learning tool for US geography. From an educator's perspective, there this program can meet both math and social studies standards (since there are tons of awesome statistical tools built in). Some of the population figures are a bit off since they're from 1990 but otherwise the program is excellent.

2. ClickArt Starter Edition. This has a few good education-oriented images in its collection so it looks to be a nice addition to the WetPaint and Claris libraries I've been using. There's also a very nice rendering of a Mac IIsi with an Apple Hi-Res 13" monitor in the set. I've only browsed through the catalog that came with it but am looking forward to using these.

3. Kindercomp (for Apple II). This is an oldie but a goodie, dating back from 1983. I actually had this program myself with my first Apple IIe--it was a surprise gift for me August 1989. It has six games in one program, including a great find-the-pattern exercise (probably my favorite due to the differentiation possibilities). This is a game I see myself using with one-on-one tutoring, especially since I can't port around Apple II stuff as easily as I can Mac stuff (none of the laptops have Apple IIe cards; the Color Classic is the best possibility here).

I got these three from the excellent folks at B&R Computer.

Also, while not a new conquest, I just found my old Reader Rabbit 1 v.3.0 disks in my closet tonight. I had been looking for these to possibly use with ESL students at some point.

Plus, I'm working out a deal with another MLAer to get myself SpellIt Plus and another Math Blaster Plus!!! I also have a deal in the works for Calculator Construction Set!!!

Now, if I could just find Math Rabbit on floppy, Hot Dog Stand on floppy, Spell-A-Saurus, Dinosaur Discovery Kit, Type!, Monsters & Make Believe, Dinosaur Days, UltraKey, Fraction Munchers, and the Munchers games for Apple II...

Just a thought....perhaps you could run the Apple II software on an Apple II emulator on a Mac, or even a PC? As long as you own as many real Apple IIs as you do systems you wish to emulate an Apple II on, it should be legal.

It's a lot of fun running Apple II stuff on a Color Classic (mine has an Apple II card in it and a UniDisk 5.25"). I'd strongly recommend tracking one down -- short of a IIc it's about as compact an Apple II as you get.

Another really nice benefit of that Apple IIe card is that when printing. You just set the software for ImageWriter II mode, and then it will auto format at the mac side to pipe it to whatever your real printer is...

I remember using a HP Deskjet that way in color from Printshop. Back then that was AMAZING!!! Real saturated color printouts!!!

Reminds me of the old Apple Lasewriter ImageWriter II emulation back then too.
