I recently got a Quadra 700. It has some weird accelerator card with wires which I don't know what to connect to. This Quadra won't start up the way it is. The LED comes on and the fan whirrs but nothing else. I would have tried to use it without the card in, but I can't get it out. Where do I connect these wires to?

I have an accelerator for my 700 that is a bit different from that one, but it also has a card that fits the ROM slot. The ROM slot works like a DIMM slot. You have to pull the metal clips on the ends back and tilt the board to a 45 degree angle to get it out.
I have the same type of wires. One of them hooks around a leg of the oscillator and another clips onto a resistor near the CPU socket. I think you may have the same one I do, the Newertech PowerPump, maybe an earlier or later revision because your ROM board looks a little different from mine.
I don't use mine as an accelerator, though. I rehoused my 700 into a IIvx case and the ROM card sticks up too high to fit under the drive tray. I left the fans installed, though as additional cooling, which was really what I bought it for because I have a 601 card that had a heat problem when I first bought it.
I don't understand how this accelerator could possibly work reliably because I never was able to get mine to work. One or both of the wires kept removing itself from where it was supposed to be. The one that clips to the resistor is especially bad. The slightest vibration makes it fall off.

If that accelerator is just for clock-chipping, it seems so complicated!
These days, with the 68k Mac hobby so small, it seems so easy to say "If you can't solder, you can't overclock" but back then, I guess it was easier for mainstream users to install that than resolder the crystal.

It came with Hypercard stacks about the human anatomy. It also has a document called "karen's resume" and "thesis". It even has a System Sound of, "Space…the final frontier" Whoever owned this mac messed with the System folder too much. I'm reinstalling the system right now. I won't be able to use the copy of NOW Utillities since that was in the System folder. I think that vital parts of Norton may have been in there too… But it doesn't matter because I still get MS Works, MS Work 5.1a, and Lotus 1-2-3. It has an hp branded HD inside of it. It seems to be a bit unstable so I will be making backups. It replaces the spot on my desk previously occupied my my LC III. The LC III is moving to the basement to resume it's life as a Windows 3.1 emulator with softwindows and expected to be set up as a print server with a Laserwriter sometime.
I just installed Mac OS 8.1! But there's one problem…The monitor & sound control panel just hangs when I try to open it! Everything BUT that works great. It somehow changed into B&W mode at some point so now I'm stuck in B&W! It's disgusting-looking. How can I get the control panel to open?

As a last resort you could maybe set the resolution you want on another machine running exactly the same OS and copy the display preferences file over.
I kind of think it's their own lookout though - if you left a file of documents in a street or gave them to someone else, then you'd expect that they might get read by someone, no? It's really just common sense to delete anything that you consider to be private before letting someone else have your old computer.
Yeah...i see your point, but i still think its unethical to read someone else's documents without their permission. Look at it this way...lets pretend you don't own a car, but you see one sitting in the street unattended with the driver's door open, the windows down, the key in the ignition, and the engine running. Would you drive off in it "just because its common sense to not do that"?
Btw, MacTCP, maybe you could enable the control strip and try changing the bit depth that way...unless someone's mucked about with the contents of the Control Strip Modules folder, there should be two modules for graphics settings: one for changing colour depth, another for resolution

The control strip doesn't work with Q700s. I tried to install ColorSwitch Pro, but it made it freeze when the startup got to that extension. It's so weird! I

I'm going to install 7.5, switch the colors, and upgrade to 8.1. If 8.1 switches it back to B&W, I'm deleting it and running 7.5.

Try resetting the PRAM? That might revert it back to default, which would be color, yes?
Who said that? The control strip works on any Mac running 7.5 or later. Although Apple used to say its a PowerBook-only feature, it'll work on any Mac...i've used it on a Q700 (mine), a C650 (not mine), all the LCs (mostly mine), several Power Macs (mostly not mine), Performas (mostly not mine), and other non-PowerBook Macs, and i've never had a problem with it.
Btw Quadraman, in System 7.6 -> 8.1, Monitors and Sound will work on most 68k's.
