Hi everyone,
This question has surely be posed before but I haven't really found any threads to it.
I have various Macs running System 6 up to 9.2.2 (and one running 10.2/10.3/10.4 but mac OS X doesn't bother me too much).
Is there a version of AppleShare Server that they all can use? There is no especial reason to use an AppleShare server other than the fact that I can. I have used filesharing up to this point. I just want filesharing and, in the future, to be able to run network games.
If I understand the Classic Mac Networking Guide [1] at the section «Apple Filing Protocol Ethernet Networks», then AppleShare File Server v2 should do.
I have AppleShare 4 and AppleShare 6 IP on CD. The latter is running on a Beige G3 on Mac OS 8.6 and my Performa 475 in Mac OS 8.1 can't see it. It seems that I have upgrade the AppleShare Client to 3.81. And while that is OK for Mac OS 8.1, I plan to run the 475 at System 7.1.
I have 2 hubs/routers — an 10Mbit hub/repeater and a 10/100/1000 router. The P475, Internet and the Beige G3 are currently plugged into the 10Mbit hub while the IIfx, MDD, B&W are in the 10/100/1000 router. The SE & SE/30 will go into the 10Mbit hub once they are up and running again. The 10Mbit hub is also plugged into the gigabit router. The G3 has Internet access (I can reset the date & time automatically in the control panels).
I have read a bit too much today about networking and the terminology is swimming around in my head.
Has anyone here implemented server software on an ethernet LAN to accommodate such a wide range of Mac OSs? If so, what version of AppleShareServer did you use and what versions of the AppleShare client did you use on the respective clients (if you remember such arcane detail)?
Thanks for your help
