AppleShare 4.0.1

I'm planning to build an AppleShare 4.0.1 server to run on a Q605. I will use OS/8.1.

The machine will be configured as follows:

132 MB RAM

PDS Ethernet

Internal boot drive HFS - size ??

External SCSI tower with:

9 gig SCSI HFS+ Shared Drive

CD burner

Tape Drive

SyQuest Drive

Software:

OS 8.1

AppleShare 4.0.1

Toast

Retrospect

The question that I have is what size drive do I need for the interal boot drive? Will an 80mb drive hold everything or do I need a larger drive? I don't want to waste a 2 gig SCSI drive that would have most of the space empty.

The Server will hold System 7, 8, and 9 files. My AS 2.0.1 server has Sys 6 and earlier files.

I know I could run ASIP 6.x on an OS 9 machine but I want a 68040 server (this is a 68K board, no?).

Thanks!

Your server will have to run 7.1 (best) or 7.5. Appleshare 4 does not run (properly - you can get some functionality with 8.1, but it is flaky) on anything higher.

Full story is available in Apple's artnum=16145. 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 is recommended for all '040-based Macs but Q660AV and 840AV.

Rats! I spent an hour reading that last night but missed the 7.1. I wanted 8.1 so I could use HFS+ on the 9 gig shared drive as a single volume. So I will have to break it down to HFS 2 gig partitions.

What size boot drive will be needed? Seems to me a 160mb ought to do it.

Drive size depends not only on what you need for storage but on what the System/OS can address, and on the drive's format. Large drives with HFS can be extremely wasteful of 'space'. I was transferring files from an inherited (with a 9600) 18GB drive formatted HFS(!) recently. Min. file size was 278kB, by contrast with the 2-16kB that you will get with HFS on smaller drives that are contemporary with the Systems that you are considering. File size can be a fixed min. 4kB under HFS+, but OS 8.1 and up is needed to cope with HFS+.

I tried this years ago, and seem to recall that the File Server will run under 8.1, but not the Print Server. (I wanted the latter: it was a Color Classic/ Mystic, and I wanted the OS8 GUI just to show it off - a CC in the corner running 8.1 that well - impossible! - AND make it useful as a bridge between a Cube and a Laserwriter 4/600, but the Print Server was inoperable under 8.1, and the project died.) YMMV, but you could give the File Server idea a shot, as there's nothng to lose but an idle hour in setting it up.

What the performance/ stability would be like in use I don't know, but I suspect that there might be anomalies.... I do know that Appleshare 4 under 7.1 is very solid.

I don't need the print server so I guess I will try the file server under 8.1.

Next step is to locate a copy of AS 4.0.1. Any suggestions? I didn't see any on ebay.

Hi,

I'm reading this, as I would like to do something similar.

My question is more basic that it could be: where can I find AppleShare (any version) ? Is it something Apple let go a while back as freeware? I've been searching but nothing so far.

Thanks

If they are not distributed on a system install disk they were originally paid-for applications (perhaps with free updates in the fashion of System software). AppleShare 4 falls into the paid-for category. The link in post 3 above will give you the recommended version for a given System/OS. This long after, the search will be long and arduous.
