Apple Video player alternative

Is there any other player out there to try against AVP? I have os 8 on the 660av.

AVP does its thing okay, but I like would like to try a different one against it.

I do not recall ever finding anything else that would let you control Apple's A/V hardware like AVP did.

Don't know of anything either that lets you control the card's hardware properly. Shame, as AVP is a buggy piece of software.

Could one perhaps reverse engineer AVP's control protocols and create a better alternative from scratch?

I know it'd be a lot of work, but is it within the realm of possibility for a hobbyist programmer?
