The AppleDesigns are among the best sound computer speakers I have heard. They easily rival the 'pod' speakers that came with some Power Macs/Cube/iMacs; and are better than the 5.1 set I have now, if I don't want surround.
I too can testify to the awesome quality of the Apple Design Speakers II.
Got my pair a few years back, they've been the only thing I've needed. (Sure I've heard speakers with better bass, but these are perfect for me.) The only thing I don't like about them if there is no switch to them off. But not a big deal with the current location of the power adapter. (Might rigged a power cable switch sometime though, to make things easier.) But I still love my Apple Design Speakers II as they are.
Yeah I don't mind if they stay powered on... I leave my main PC speakers on all the time since turning them off means moving the volume control and I hate having to find the prime volume over and over.
I won an eBay auction a while back for a new pair of black Apple Design Speakers II. After I had won and paid for them, they refunded my PayPal money several days later and never shipped the item. All I could do was leave bad feedback which they didn't even dispute.
Electronics contact cleaner sprayed into the volume control on a pair that I acquired a couple of years ago worked magic on them; static had been a problem but the contact cleaner made them (sound-wise) good as new. They had, however, been stored in humid conditions and have a bit of rust on the metal grill at the front.
