A/UX-Compatible CD-ROM's

The A/UX faq has a very short list of compatible CD-ROM drives... and most of them are old, slow, and getting difficult to find. I would like to compile a list of newer cdrom drives that are known to work with A/UX. So, if you've installed A/UX using a newer drive (anything not listed in the faq), please post the make/model.

Personally, I've used these drives:

AppleCD 300 Plus (Sony CDU561-25)

AppleCD 300i Plus (Panasonic/Matsushita CR-503-K)

AppleCD 600i (Panasonic/Matsushita CR-504-C)

Please specify if the drive can be successfully used to install A/UX and/or under A/UX. I'll get the information added to the FAQ.

You can add the 32X Toshiba XM-6201B to the list... It works fine during and after the installation of A/UX on my Quadra's (610 and 800). I did encounter the "no root file system" error at first, but a hard reboot cured that.

My external Pioneer 12x SCSI CDROM works. I'll give you the model number as soon as I figure out how to get the model number in A/UX 3.0.1. Looks like this is going to keep me busy for a while.

Finally got off my lazy butt and connected the drive to the G3 to get the model number. Here's the relevant information for the drive I use with A/UX on my Quadra 700:

Make and Model:

Vendor: Pioneer

Revision number: 1.06

Product ID: CD-ROM DR-U12X

Speed: 12 Times

Model: DR-466

A/UX Status:

Install A/UX: Works

Under A/UX: Works

Additional Information:

Pioneer CD-ROM DR-U12X

Edit: Added model number to specifications. This is the actual model number that is printed on the drive mechanism product label: DR-466

It differs from version to version of A/UX, does it not? I seem to remember it being quite hard to find something to install version 2 with. In any case, I've got a CD/SC on its way from Italy at vast expense.

I installed successfully off of a SCSI-1 Pioneer DVD-303S-A with the 512-byte-block jumper set. I'm installing the AWS 95 Software Update (3.0.x -> 3.1) with the same drive as I write this post.

The Pioneer DR-U16S works for installing A/UX 3.0.1 and can be used together with A/UX 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 later on.
