The untimely portended "demise" of my G4 Cube (since partly resuscitated, diagnosed and put in the "to be properly fixed" pile) has forced me to give some attention to a dual 1.8 GHz G5 tower with bashed case that had been languishing in the basement.
Quite apart from the case, which needed to be restored to something like normalcy, it had been unstable under a quick installation of X.5 Server, which had been put on it purely in an effort to tinker with the wiki settings for work-related purposes (I didn't want to bugger up the real server in the office). However, after having wiped the drive, and with the installation of Tiger, it now seems perfectly stable. Under X.4.11, it runs like a champ. Meanwhile, under the desk and out of sight, the G5 doesn't look so bad!
Now, since the G5 had a spare DVI port capable of driving a 23" screen, well, I couldn't resist when a pristine 23" Apple Cinema Display came up for the right price in the local For Sale ads, could I?
It is presently looking good alongside my 17" acrylic ADC display, both of which are running fine from the stock NVidia 5200 card in dual display mode. I don't do much gaming, so the stock card is perfectly acceptable for the intended uses — the most important of which is to drive both a DVI and an ADC display without fuss or additional expense.
