128K Screen saver ?

Hello good people.

Does anyone know if there is a screen saver of some kind for a 128K mac

I recently rebuilt the analog board of a 128K for a customer , on the other side of the planet , who just told me he uses the machine for a shop display.

The poor 128K is turned on all day - no wonder the flyback melted.

I have rebuilt the analog board and fitted the machine with a fanny mac cooler

Im guessing it just sits there all day , at the desktop - so screen burn is a real possibility

then i was thinking screensaver

but with 128K of ram , i doubt it


anyone know of anything to run , that will not cause to much heat and save the screen from burn in ?

yeah you'd have to upgrade it to at least 512k to use AfterDark/DarkSide

found something about a clock screensaver ......... not much good

poor 128K !!!

i sold it to him about 6 years ago and he had it in a shop display , just sitting there all day , turned on - just told me today

it must hold a world record runtime for a 128

i replaced the flyback with one from a plus , Q2 , full recap of analog board and now it has a 'fanny mac' fan sucking out air , giving some cooling at least

i know these after market fans help , they called them 'system savers' ........... I think it should be OK

I have no info on the life expectency of a 128K with a system saver fan , running all day

you rekon he is good to put it back on display , running 8 hours , non stop , 5 days a week ?

I tried to explain to him that people that own 128Ks , own them as collections or investments , and only turn them on for a few minutes at a time to see if they still work



poor 128k ........... its a week 15 production of 84 - ive done my best to give it its best chance - even recapped the 3 radials from the logic board

will be packing it up for shipping back to malaysia tomorrow

They will have to keep them very cool indeed. And of course the screensaver would be very much handy to prevent screen burn-in (if it hasn't already happened).

I believe that there were some very simple screensavers that you could launch manually as DAs, but they may still require at least a 512k machine, I don't know for sure.

He's better off selling it to a masochist, buying a Classic, running After Dark and pocketing the change.

Yep. I’ve got a collection of those I use on my 512k; a lot of them became After Dark modules down the road. Nightlines, Moire, Meltdown, Warp (Starfield), etc. Most of them are < 7k, I can’t believe they wouldn’t run on a 128k.

There is also Pyro, which is very lightweight (RAM-wise), especially "Stars" (which also looks much better than AfterDark's Starfield module imo).

The AfterDark 2.0 cdev may be a bit much for a 128k, but I would think AD 1.0 would work okay?

Tell him to take a picture of the mac desktop and cut and fit it to the crt screen. Looks on, but isnt lol.. good grief why would you want it running all day.. oh well, cant control what people do with stuff you sell them

its a prop , on display in his shop - nothing I can do about it

sent him links to vids explaining the overheating issues of 128K's

sent him more links of the solutions , fanny mac fan , and system saver fan , even offered to sell him my own fanny mac , for the sake of the machine , AND MY WORK !!!!

in the end he didnt want the fan - so its heading back to him

Pity there is no inbuilt 'runtime' timer on macs ............ this one must have already broken records !!!........ and now its going back for round 2 with a better flyback and the best of caps - it might last another 6 years for him

probably broke records for compacts, if not set by somebody using one as a localtalk/appletalk server

I 100% do NOT believe in not using vintage stuff and just letting it sit, but here I have to agree. If you want to run a compact mac 24/7 I see absolutely no reason to use a 128k. I love firing up my 128 and playing around with it, but a Plus, SE or even a 512k would be much more practical for this application. Would be much cheaper and you could run stuff like After Dark.

The most ideal machine if he wants the same look would probably be one of the Mac Plus "upgrade" units. That way it would still look just like the original 128k from the front, but with the added benefits and lower cost of a Plus. Those are pretty easy to find still.
