12" AlBooks & iBooks achieve hackable price levels . . .

.  .  .  and I've been looking for a cheap 12" XGA LCD in LVDS anyway.

A couple of cute little AlPartsBooks© to keep the PartsMo© company is sounding like a great idea right about now. Prices for incomplete 'Books of both types appear to have come down to little more than twice that of the parted out LCD from one of their less fortunate litter mates.

It's deja vu all over again! These puppies are obviously heading for recycling faster than we're managing to snap 'em up, so the preservation window of opportunity is wide open. Let the hacking begin!

edit: oh yeah, those are LVDS panels, right???

I snagged 4 ibook 12" LCD assemblies last July for spares, was pretty cheap actually (17.50 shipped). All of them work.

The 12.1" LCDs in PB G4s are the ones you need for modding a Clamshell iBook to XGA :)  It should also include the right cable too ...

I'm getting excited about pulling it apart and again anxious at the same time. Took a good look through the illustrations in the ServiceSource this thing's no 1400! 8-o

Good thing though, the 1400 LCD interface was Apple's customary inscrutable mess. It's so refreshing to see a part in the exploded diagram labeled "LVDS Cable!" The hacking commences, on a bit higher level of complexity than back in the day. Nobody can say I'm murdering collectors items at this point, I'm lookin' for junkers.

Scavenging 'Books off the bottom of eBay like this in years past is how I wound up with the 1400 stack that's only now just barely getting under control. New toys!  :D

I got one of those for $80 8 years ago, when they were still somewhat relevant (Leopard was a current OS, so PPC hadn't completely died yet).

The thing had a broken screen and never worked quite right. I eventually parted it out when it became unresponsive after a hard drive upgrade (I discovered, several years later, that it was actually a faulty optical drive connector that caused it to appear dead).

Anyway, if they're getting that cheap, maybe I'll pick one up and repair it, for old time's sake.

Though I do have a nice 1.33 GHz model which is superior in almost every way...

I got my 1GHz 12 incher a few years back for something like $40 from someone local who wanted to find it a good home. It became my backup road machine. I still haven't given the little PB the TLC it deserves. But it'll stay in the AppleUnit's PBookShelf section while I practice up by tearing some of its less fortunate stablemates apart. [}:)] ]'>

The thing I probably hated most about the iPhone I got as an all but free downgrade from Verizon a couple of years back was that Apple wouldn't allow it to tether to the little PB running under Tiger. Went back to the Droid until fairly recently after HP_Mini came back to life and that was no longer an issue. Still not thrilled about using the iPhone again, but it's just a phone, I try my best not to even text on a phone.
