It was the corrosion. White vinegar didn't work so I had to resort to the Dremel with a wire wheel. It works as it should now. The clock, time and all the settings save after shutdown.

So it looks like the upper contact has a fair amount of corrosion. You were all correct! I tried cleaning it but it still doesn't seem enough – the date still isn't saving. What's the best way to clean them up? Tips? I'd like to make sure this isn't the issue before taking the next step. My...
Yes, the battery is a type 523 4.5v. It's the one in the attached photo. I got it from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005AW9YGE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I know the battery is good because I checked it with a voltmeter.
