Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
On top of timing, and different use of esoteric m68k'isms between the two:
Targets: There are very few actually different Amiga hardware models (even the 500 and the 2000 are almost identical, even if looking radically different), similarly fewer (and very clear) rom versions. Whereas even...
Yes, it does it all as a single segment, because it is just a version of gcc, which creates unix style .o files, and even an "executable" before using a custom backend on the ld linker to convert that to a Mac format. (Either CODE or PEF). Since the linking to .a files is done before...
I've always wondered about the potential for using the slot for something else also.
It will depend highly on what kind of controller Apple used for it...is it actually anything close to a real PCMCIA controller, or is it just a hack that does just enough to handle a few extremely particular...
Hi Snial! Only just saw this post. I went on a Retro68 kick earlier this year, and built it on Linux and MacOS X and have used it quite a bit. I didn't have any trouble on Linux or my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro...at the time.
I was doing quite a bit of MacOS 9 coding on a Tiger G4, so wanted...
Now have SDL2_image, SDL2_mixer, SDL2_ttf and SDL2_gfx.
SDL2_image and SDL2_mixer aren't using ANY external libraries yet, as I haven't built them, so file formats limited.
@nickpunt, you are, of course very right about things going in bursts. My work on SDL2 is a great example. I'll forever remember winter '24 spring '25 as my "season of SDL2" where I at least thought about it pretty much daily. There's no way I'll sustain that level, and will naturally taper...
Sadly, I doubt the official SDL2 folk would have much interest in classic MacOS support, so even if I did a PR, the chances of it being accepted are likely vanishingly small...but that is an interesting question, where from here?
I have to admit, I may have been naive, thinking "if you build it...
Updates:
Enough key and mouse events now for really basic games.
Have switched primarily to Retro68 from Codewarrior and loving it.
Split stuff only CodeWarrior needs just for it.
All tests build, but, of course, many still fail due to missing drivers.
Created skeleton audio and joystick...
Ah...sorry, I meant to specify that like adespoton, I just use static settings and have never tried BOOTP.
So, you are likely correct, in that it is broken.
Also, not that it matters, but it is on a B&W g3. I have an older pre-mosxs Rhapsody on my 7600.
I have it on a 7600 and haven't seen this. Might look in the system logs and see if more info on what it was doing before it crashed. Might also run one of them in gdb and could see where the crash is.
This was good to do because it looks like one of my radeons got damaged at some point and shows vertical lines through everything!
No difference detected as far as sound goes for cards vs no card.
Heard crackling at a few points while loading extensions and changing volume, but otherwise no...
My thought was if the shielding weren't connected to the power supply, it could possibly resonate at a slightly different frequency (electrically?)...or something...my electronics knowledge is self taught.
I've got 5 cards, a pair of rage 128's, a pair of low end radeons, and an ix3d. I...
Very strange. If it's a grounding issue, you wouldn't think it would just happen to you. The case has metal in it that I'm guessing is shielding to temp down things inside interfering externally...does it physically connect to the metal of the power supply or ground to the motherboard in any...
Just in case anyone out there actually looked at the files/folders in my SDL2 and got confused by some names:
We are talking about a file called "SDL_main.o", built from src/main/macosclassic/SDL_main.c...but you might notice there's a folder called "SDL-main" also there. The folder contains...
Re patching consoles, et al: I was alive and coding back then and have similar memories/experiences. I recently looked a little into replacing SIOW with SIOUX for a FreePascal game port for MacOS 9 I never finished, because it needed to do things SIOW didn't have. I didn't get far (because it...
Looks like YOU thought of it! That's a very good idea, but hard to visualize the final form and extent.
It could build on DebugStr, and trap those messages to a log instead of the debugger. (So a decent toolbox call already exists). Would be lovely if it could replace not just MPW's standard...
Since I had such luck with SDL2 for MacOS 7/8/9 and many people asked about it, I decided I'd at least make a try at SDL3.
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/sdl3-macos-9-rough-draft
I'm probably not going to make much more effort on it, and instead concentrate on my SDL2 port, but figured I'd...
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/sdl2-macos-9-rough-draft
Very very rough port to classic MacOS, but tests work. Despite the current name (which I'll be changing), also runs on M68k 7.6.
I created a video driver (which also handles events, only Command Q for now). Basic drawing works, but...
You should try the card in the different slots to see if there's any difference in the noise. This won't tell you what is going on, but will be a data point. If the noise changes, it makes it more likely that shielding on the card will help (because the components on the card will be closer or...
