Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
This is kind of random but I developed Can of Worms in 2010. So this is like 10.6 era though, not 10.4 or 10.5. I think it was Intel only unfortunately. Attached.
It's funny you mention that. I have a hobby business restoring Mac mini G4s and reselling them with an SSD with the Mac OS 9 Lives hacked Mac OS 9 pre-installed to customers who still want or need to run Classic programs. I've had some interesting customers: dentists, veterinarians, and even...
Awesome work on this. I enjoyed your writeup. It sounds like it was quite the 5-year journey, including learning to program the Classic Mac OS yourself. It's also interesting to see what a productivity booster an LLM can be to a lone developer in very particular situations (translating 68K ASM)...
If you're in the US and comfortable taking it apart and putting it back together, I can send you the WiFi/Bluetooth module. After refurbishing 80+ of these I have an extra or two. PM me if interested.
It would be interesting, @Trash80toHP_Mini , for you to try MacBench 4 on it and see what PPC machine it is equivalent to. I think @Snial's analysis is correct.
That's interesting. Thanks for posting. For those interested in doing this note that you could also use lids from the first ever Intel mini, A1176, in addition to A1283. A1176 for obvious reasons tends to be even cheaper, but of course is a little older so may be more yellow to begin with. I...
Congrats on the mini acquisition and good luck with the upgrades.
Yes, 190 GB is the maximum size for a partition I think in Mac OS 9. I think you could have a larger volume but you need to partition it.
I have not tested compact flash. Regardless, we are limited by the ATA bus.
Your idea is...
That's fair. It would be cool if a v10 of the Mac OS 9 image for minis comes out, but realistically it is seeming less and less likely as the years go on that one will. For practical purposes, regarding the current state of the image, a 1.25 GHz or 1.42 GHz offers better compatibility than a...
Yes, by logic board I meant motherboard. It certainly sounds like a possibility. Power supply sounds a little unlikely if it's booting at all, but can't be ruled out yet. Anyway, please keep us informed about what you discover.
It does sound like you've tried almost everything. Are you able to get into open firmware? Have you tried the standard open firmware commands:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
More here:

That's the only "standard thing" you didn't mention...
You have to make sure all of the metal latches are straightened (very common for some of them to be a little crooked). You can straighten them using needle nosed plyers. Also you need to apply strong and even force on one side of the machine at a time to close the case. It can be a little...
Thanks. I haven't had particular experience with that adapter, but it does look like the same ICs with a different metal heat shield than the one I use. I've had very good success with the cablecc product with the white case (also available under other brands). But as I wrote above I doubt the...
Can you link to the specific adapter you’re using?
But no, I’ve only seen overheating on minis that were either not thoroughly cleaned, had a blocked airway for some reason, missing heat sink pin, or fan improperly installed. The SSDs actually reduce the likelihood of overheating. But maybe...
Yeah that's a fair summary. The whole audio situation is not great unfortunately but these are the cheapest name-brand still sold as brand new high quality speakers that work well.
Sounds like you just had the fan in backwards... but as an aside I'm curious why you installed the MDD image instead of the Mac mini image of Mac OS 9?
I think that's totally valid reasoning. There are certainly tradeoffs but for me my 1.5 GHz mini compared to my 867 MHz G4 is:
- roughly twice the speed (with the SSD upgrade maybe a little more)
- uses 1/5 the electricity
- takes up 1/10 the space
- operates almost silently
For me that's worth...
It works well for the most part if you have the right setup. As mentioned this needs to include USB Speakers and a period Apple mouse. But ultimately it's an unsupported hack and there are several limitations that someone doing this should be aware of:
- Audio not working well outside of USB...
