Great! I'll take a look. You can send plain text to the ImageWriter (and, probably the LaserWriter) and it will just happily print out whatever it gets. So ghostscript isn't strictly needed. I'll eventually see about getting the ImageWriter status ported over from netatalk...

@Bolacore do you have a special pap-print you used with your ImageWriter? I took your example and paired it down by getting rid of the postscript stuff but the connection fails. It does see and connect to the ImageWriter it seems. After a minute or so something times out and the ImageWriter...

Well, more somewhat goofy results from today! I put my G3 at the end of the long phone cord, to see if it would be able to connect to the tashtalk. And, it did not, until I removed the terminator from the phone net connector next to the tashtalk! I then tried the ImageWriter with the...

If you are able to reproduce and are interested in a change to address it, I'd happily test things out. I do enjoy learning more about all of this stuff. Its vintage tech, so I have no expectations that any of this stuff works perfectly at all times. I'll do another test soon, putting my G3 at...

I don't have an oscilloscope, but I can do SMD soldering. Just let me know what you have in mind. Of course I have no issue just going with a shorter cable too if that is the solution. I have no barbed wire fence in the suburbs!

It doesn't appear that my cheap sparkfun LA has any analog capabilities. Attached is a pulseview file I captured. Do you have a not so expensive LA you would recommend?

The tashtalk is only capturing the lookup requests from the LC - and not the responses from the IW. I don't think anything "started to work" with this. I can attach a file from pulseview if you are interested.

The phone lines I have are all 4-conductor, Yellow, Green, Red, Black on both ends. They all work with old school phone net connectors and original hardware. The length of the cable is the issue.

I did a few captures with my basic logic analyzer and the original setup with long cables. The LC's startup traffic is captured by tashtalkcap.py (top is localtalk in, bottom is UART out): Here the ImageWriter is starting up, then, a wait as I open the chooser to view AT Imagewriters...

My IW is usually across the room, connected by a 25' (or perhaps longer) phone cord. It works with real hardware. It was only detected by tailtalk with a shorter cord. I'll try to do more testing soon.

Well, I moved my ImageWriter and connected it with a different piece of phone cord between it and the tashtalk, and, it shows up! So perhaps the length of the phone cord matters for tailtalk, but not so much for the Mac. Would this be a software timing thing or a hardware thing where the...

I have a cheap sparkfun 24MHz/8-Channel logic analyzer. How should I hook it up?

Sorry, I misunderstood how tashtalkcap.py works then. I thought it was like "promiscuous mode" where it would capture all localtalk traffic.

The interesting part, i think, is that i'm not able to capture this reply using the usb-tashtalk hardware. Not using a capture program based on the rust code, and not using the python tashtalkcap.py either. I'm not good at rust code, but my python isn't bad. tashtalkcap.py literally just...

The ImageWriter lookup response isn't being captured by tashtalkcap.py or tailtalk, so, I used AppleTalk Peek running on my LC II to capture the packets between my Powerbook G3 and ImageWriter II. The only devices on this phonenet were the ImageWriter, LCII and PB G3. I omitted the first several...

I replicated the capture - the network is ImageWriter -> LC II -> TashTalk alone on phonenet.

My network media is phone net: ImageWriter -> LC II -> Tashtalk (with terminators on the ends) I sometimes bridge to ethernet/wifi when I'm transferring from netatalk on a pi: ImageWriter -> LC II -> Tashtalk -> Ethermac iPrint I'll redo the captures soon to ensure I didn't have the iprint...

Looks like tashtalkcap doesn't see the imagewriter either. I did a couple of captures, plenty of frames and 0 errors.

If you are interested, I was able to capture the NBP reply from the LC II. Attached.

in the LC_IWII capture I did have the printer and LC II on, and the ImageWriter showed up in chooser. I didn't notice the lack of responses. Interesting - but they must have been on the wire for them to show up in the chooser. I do sometimes see Localtalk framing error/aborted warnings. Perhaps...
